The undergraduate programs at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) have earned a reputation for winning top prizes in local business competitions. Several teams have been successful in major professional institute competitions organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA), the Hong Kong Society of Financial Analysts (HKSFA), and the Institute of Financial Planners of Hong Kong (IFPHK).
In the HKICPA Qualification Programme (QP) Case Analysis Competition 2015, a team of four first year Global Business students triumphed over almost 350 teams and won the top prize. The champion team formed by Julia Leung Ka-wei (also named the Best Presenter), Alan Lam Ho-nam, Chevan Tin Tze-wang and Tony Hui Hang-yung clinched victory through extensive research and persistent refinements to their business proposal. Another HKUST team also claimed the first runners-up spot.
The HKICPA QP Case Analysis Competition aims to provide local university students with early exposure to the business environment. Contestants get to experience some real-life problems faced by organizations through tackling a specific QP case question, with this year’s question focusing on the food and beverage industry. The top three teams will be given internship opportunities at leading corporations.
Hosted by HKSFA, the Hong Kong Final of the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) Institute Research Challenge 2015-2016 saw another HKUST team shine. Four final year Quantitative Finance students, Henry Chow, Billy Lee, Serena Wu and Jason Zhao teamed up with Leo Chen, a Finance student, to develop a comprehensive research analysis plan to claim the top honor. HKUST students have won the CFA Challenge for two consecutive years.
The CFA Challenge is designed to promote best practice in research among the next generation of analysts. The winning team from Hong Kong will advance to the Regional Competitions and Global Final in Chicago next year and compete with the winning teams from other geographical regions.
Back in September, another HKUST undergraduate team was named the winner of the SCMP/IFPHK Financial Planner Awards for 2015 (University Student Category). This award honors outstanding students who show potential in financial planning. The HKUST team formed by Dexter Mak and Sam Tsang (Quantitative Finance), Jean Li (Global Business and Finance) and Steven Yu (Professional Accounting & Finance) impressed the judges with their thorough analysis and well thought-out recommendations.
“I am glad that our undergraduate students concluded 2015 by winning multiple awards in competitions organized by three highly respected professional institutes. These achievements reflect the quality of our students as well as the practical and rigorous training provided by our Department of Accounting and Department of Finance,” said Prof Emily Nason, Associate Dean and UG Programs Director of the HKUST Business School. “We will continue to enhance our UG programs to nurture all-rounded students with professional knowledge and abilities to solve business problems in different settings.”
