The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today announced the results of the World Class Tests (Mathematics and Problem Solving) held in November 2008 at the HKUST campus and various school test sites in Hong Kong. Over 2,280 youngsters took part in over 4,000 tests. Among them, about 500 came from places outside Hong Kong, including Beijing, Foshan, Shenzhen, Macau and Taiwan. For the 8 to 11 age group, 1,736 students took the Mathematics paper, and 853 students took the Problem Solving paper. For the 12 to 14 age group, 312 students took the Mathematics paper, and 195 students took the Problem Solving paper. Prof Edmund Chiang, who had analyzed the results of the Tests, said, “We are still at a relatively early stage of data collection, but with more data accumulated over the coming years, we will be able to draw meaningful conclusions.”

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (Friday, 27 February 2009) announced the appointment of Prof Leonard Cheng as Dean of the School of Business and Management (Business School). The appointment, which takes effect on 1 March 2009, was made after an open and competitive international search. Announcing the appointment, HKUST Vice-President for Academic Affairs Prof Roland Chin said he is very pleased that the university has found an eminent economics scholar and an able administrator to lead the Business School during this challenging period in the development of HKUST. Prof Cheng has been Acting Dean of the Business School over the last 20 months during which the school has grown from strength and strength, with students, faculty and programs winning numerous accolades.

Professor Chak Chan of HKUST has become the first Asian to be appointed Editor-in-chief of a leading academic journal on air pollution in its 50-year history. In his new capacity as Editor-in-chief of Atmospheric Environment, Prof Chan will be in charge of the Journal’s China Office in HKUST and join hands with two other editors, Prof P Brimblecombe of UK’s University of East Anglia and Dr H B Singh of USA’s NASA Ames Research Centre in managing the manuscripts for the Journal. Prof Chan, who is Associate Head of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at HKUST, said, “It is an exciting challenge to be Editor-in-chief of a leading academic journal on such an important area as Atmospheric Environment and which commands a wide readership across the globe.

State-of-the-art High Brightness Light Emitting Diode (HD-LED) Solid State Lighting (SSL) modules jointly developed by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the MTR Corporation are being installed on three MTR trains. The first train has been deployed this week on the Tsuen Wan Line for public transportation services, offering passengers pleasurable subway journeys with environmentally friendly high tech illumination.   According to recent research results, HD-LED SSL consumes 20%-30% less electricity than conventional lighting with fluorescent tubes. In addition, its long lasting lifespan of 50,000 hours is at least 5 times that of regular household fluorescent tubes, and 3 times that of the fluorescent tubes used on the MTR. This feature substantially reduces the cost of maintenance/replacement and the generation of waste, giving considerable benefits to environmental protection.

由 香 港 科 技 大 學 （ 科 大 ） 土 木 及 環 境 工 程 學 系 學 生 會 及 科 大 土 木 及 環 境 工 程 學 系 合 辦 的 全 港 中 學 生 砌 橋 比 賽 2009 決 賽 今 日 中 午 假 科 大 賽 馬 會 大 堂 舉 行 ， 結 果 由 保 良 局 姚 連 生 中 學 摘 冠 。 砌 橋 比 賽 之 目 的 ， 是 讓 中 學 生 可 以 體 驗 模 型 建 設 、 以 模 擬 現 實 建 築 物 承 受 力 的 狀 況 ， 同 時 令 他 們 有 機 會 接 觸 土 木 工 程 系 這 一 個 學 科 。 本 屆 比 賽 的 主 題 是 吊 橋 。 初 賽 於 2009 年 1 月 18 日 舉 行 ， 在 十 隊 進 入 初 賽 的 隊 伍 中 ， 只 有 四 隊 能 晉 身 決 賽 ， 他 們 是 香 港 中 國 婦 女 會 中 學 、 寶 血 會 上 智 英 文 書 院 、 趙 聿 修 紀 念 中 學 以 及 保 良 局 姚 連 生 中 學 。 為 了 確 保 比 賽 的 公 平 ， 學 生 會 邀 請 了 香 港 工 程 師 學 會 土 木 部 主 席 梁 以 德 工 程 師 教 授 、 英 國 公 路 及 運 輸 學 會 香 港 分 會 代 表 盧 紹 麟 工 程 師 及 科 大 土 木 及 環 境 工 程 學 系 張 志 成 教 授 擔 任 比 賽 的 評 判 。 決 賽 的 評 分 標 準 分 為 三 部 分 ： 第 一 部 分 是 橋 的 載 重 能 力 ， 能 夠 以 較 少 的 物 料 承 受 較 大 的 重 量 就 能 得 到 較 高 分 數 ； 第 二 部 分 是 設 計 概 念 ， 評 判 將 會 以 其 模 型 設 計 的 獨 特 性 、 可 行 性 、 科 學 根 據 及 實 用 性 作 出 評 分 ； 最 後 一 部 分 則 是 橋 的 外 觀 。
