Kong Wing Man Samantha Year 3, Chemical and Environmental Engineering Head Student Ambassador of HKUST Recipient of the HK Top 10 Outstanding Youth Three years ago, I entered HKUST with the dream of accomplishing a goal – to become an all-round person. My years here have subsequently proved to be the most rewarding in my life.

Lam Ho Tat Year 2, major in Physics HKUST is well known for its Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP), which encourages students to gain early research experience with distinguished professors. UROP is not officially open to freshmen. However, in the first week of the first semester in Year 1, I decided to email Prof Kwok Yip Szeto in the Department of Physics to express my interest. Very fortunately, he decided to accept me and I started doing theoretical physics research under his supervision.

HKUST research team has developed a comprehensive 3D mapping technology and platform which are critical for the next-generation of true 3D maps chased now by all internet giants in US and China. Led by Prof Long Quan from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at HKUST, his team uses only photographs and computer programs to produce a complete 3D picture of any place. His team plans to be the first to make a 3D map of Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) undergraduates have achieved the best results ever in the CIMA Global Business Challenge in Hong Kong. One team took the championship title and the other was the second runner-up. To complete an impressive performance, an HKUST student was named the “Best Future Business Leader”. The CIMA Global Business Challenge is organized by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), a professional body of management accountants with more than 218,000 members and students worldwide. Its annual competition is designed to test undergraduate students’ skills and knowledge in all areas of business management through an assessment of professional competence in management accounting. Teams of four are asked to prepare and present recommendations in a business scenario.

The HKUST Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) Sub-team, which consists of 14 HKUST students from different disciplines, won championship in Explorer Class in the 9th Hong Kong/Asia Regional IET/MATE Underwater Robot Challenge in April. This is the fourth time that HKUST has won the championship. Other than participating in the competition, HKUST students also integrate their engineering knowledge in community projects. This year, the ROV Sub-team provided training workshops for children in the Ebenezer School and Home for the Visually Impaired in Hong Kong to promote engineering knowledge to all levels of society.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its annual ceremony for the award of Honorary Fellowships today. Officiating at the ceremony were Mr Martin Y Tang, Vice-Chairman of HKUST Council, and Prof Tony F Chan, President of HKUST. Four distinguished leaders awarded the 2014 Honorary Fellowships were Dr Winnie Ko Pui-shuen, Mr Ron McEachern, The Hon Abraham Shek Lai-him and Dr David Sin Wai-kin. MBA students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) recently took home the championships of the Sofaer International Case Competition in Israel and the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Case Competition in Hong Kong. This extends their winning streak to four competitions this Spring semester. The annual Sofaer International Case Competition, organized by Tel Aviv University, challenges MBA students from around the world with a real business case that focuses on innovation and entrepreneurship. This year, the competition asked contenders to propose a go-to-market strategy for an ultra-sound surgery method created by an Israeli medical technology start-up called InSightec. The procedure is used to remove uterine fibroids and bone tumors.

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) – a signature program at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to give undergraduate students an early taste of research under the guidance of faculty members, has nurtured many young talented researchers since its launch in 2005.  Year 2 Physics student Ho-tat Lam, champion of the University Research Award this year, will attend two international conferences this summer to share with scholars worldwide his new research findings.
