Information Literacy in Hong Kong
Information literacy is a set of skills, attitudes, and behaviors that allows people to recognize when they want or need information, and then to search, locate, evaluate, manage, and use what they find effectively and ethically. It is tightly bound up with exercising ?the mind?s power to inquire freely.?   At the Library, we strive to help students develop these abilities. Part of these efforts lie in measuring how our students are doing; developing librarian?s abilities to do so; as well as joining with librarians across Hong Kong to help Hong Kong?s university students improve their information literacy.

HKUST Researchers Find Possible Mechanisms of Human Brain Disorders That May Shed Light on New Treatments
A research team led by Prof Mingjie Zhang, Kerry Holdings Professor of Science of the Division of Life Science at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has achieved a breakthrough that provides mechanistic insights into the causes that lead to various neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism, intellectual disorders (ID) and schizophrenia. With their discoveries, new treatments for these disorders may be developed in near future. All neurons in our brain are wired via a micron-sized connection unit called synapse, and each synapse contains a layer of densely-packed, protein-rich compartment called postsynaptic density (PSD), which is responsible for brain signal processing and transmission. While the existence of PSDs has been known to scientists for 60 years, how PSDs form and change in response to brain activities are poorly understood.

“HeadStart@HKUST Program” Brushes Up Freshmen’s Competitiveness With Early Workplace Immersion and Career Development Guidance
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)’s inaugural “HeadStart@HKUST Program” (HeadStart) aims to offer first and second year undergraduate students a “head-start” in the increasingly global and competitive society through an early workplace immersion and career development scheme. Initiated by HKUST Council Members Catherine Leung, Prof Jack Lau and Prof May-yi Shaw, Assistant Professor of Humanities Education of the Division of Humanities, the program was launched in February. Unlike common internship programs, HeadStart consists of three components – Internship, Mentorship, and Fellowship – that are designed to provide students with a holistic workplace training and career enrichment experience.

Riding to Success
An HKUST student is capitalizing on her award-winning equestrian skills to succeed in the university’s competitive mechanical engineering program. Second-year HKUST MECH student Oi Man Leung is not one to rest on her laurels. Less than a week after representing Hong Kong at the 11th World University Equestrian Championship in Flyinge, Sweden, where she took 4th place in the jumping semi-finals on 2 July, she was making her mark in the Iranian capital of Tehran. Competing on 8 July in the Young Riders Class at the Concourse de Saut International, an international equestrian show-jumping event, Leung garnered two top awards, a Silver and a Gold, despite having to compete on an unfamiliar horse. “Being an athlete has taught me to persevere in tough situations and to never be afraid of challenges, however difficult they may be,” she explains.
