HKUST Researchers Pioneer Pathway to Mechanical Intelligence by Breaking Symmetry in Soft Composite Materials
A research team, led by Prof. XU Qin from the Department of Physics (PHYS) and Prof. HU Wenqi from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has developed soft composite systems with highly programmable, asymmetric mechanical responses. By integrating “shear-jamming transitions” into compliant polymeric solids, this innovative work enhances key material functionalities essential for engineering mechano-intelligent systems— a major step toward the development of next-generation smart materials and devices.

HKUST Collaborates with Huashan Hospital and Ruijin Hospital to Advance Medical Research and Nurture Innovative Clinical Scientists
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has officially established a strategic partnership by signing cooperation agreements with Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University (Huashan) and Ruijin Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (Ruijin). The collaboration will focus on research, talent development, medical education, and international exchange, aiming to jointly nurturing clinical scientists and medical professionals with international perspectives and cutting-edge innovative capabilities. This partnership seeks to accelerate the translation and application of high-level clinical research outcomes and promote high-quality development of healthcare across both cities.

HKUST and SEMI to Co-Host the 2025 Semiconductor Innovation and Intelligent Application Summit (SIIAS) – Premiering in Hong Kong on December 2
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is pleased to partner with SEMI to co-host the inaugural Semiconductor Innovation and Intelligent Application Summit (SIIAS) on December 2, 2025. Supported by the HKSAR Government, this landmark event will be held in Hong Kong for the first time, bringing together global industry leaders, pioneering researchers, and key policymakers to shape the future of semiconductor innovation and drive the industry's strategic development. The SIIAS will further establish Hong Kong as a global innovation hub for microelectronics and advanced manufacturing.

HKUST Welcomes Hungarian Research Network to Advance AI and Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration
Prof. Tim CHENG, Vice-President for Research and Development at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) warmly hosted a delegation from the Hungarian Research Network (HUN-REN) on November 21, joined by Prof. Penger TONG, Associate Vice-President for Research and Development (Research) and Dr. Shin Cheul KIM, Associate Vice-President for Research and Development (Knowledge Transfer).The delegation was led by Prof. Balázs GULYÁS, President of HUN-REN, accompanied by Mr. Roland JAKAB, Chief Executive Officer, and Ms. Barbara Ning BÁLINT, International Scientific Secretary.With a shared vision to pioneer the development and application of AI across interdisciplinary fields, both parties engaged in productive discussions on potential collaborations, including joint academic events, faculty-led workshops, and seed fund initiatives aimed at strengthening research ties and advancing innovation.
Prof. DAI Xi, the Dr William M W Mong Professor of Nanoscience and Chair Professor of Physics at HKUST, has been awarded the 2025 Future Science Prize in Physical Science.

Among them is Prof. DAI Xi, the Dr William M W Mong Professor of Nanoscience and Chair Professor of Physics at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). His theoretical work in condensed matter physics and topological materials research has added fresh perspectives to modern physics, earning him the prestigious 2025 Future Science Prize—widely regarded as China’s equivalent to the Nobel Prize.

Prof. GUO Yike Elected as International Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering
Prof. GUO Yike, Provost and Chair Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been elected as an International Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the Information and Electronics Engineering Division. The CAE is the nation's highest academic institution in engineering sciences and technology, and membership is considered as the highest lifelong academic honor in the field.
