HKUST's First PhD Research Excellence Award Recognizes Students' Outstanding Research Achievements in Engineering
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its first presentation of the School of Engineering PhD Research Excellence Award today to recognize the outstanding research achievements of its engineering PhD students and recent graduates. The award is granted to those who have made significant and influential contributions to knowledge in the discipline during their PhD studies at HKUST.
The three award recipients are Dr Weiping Wang from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Dr Huanfeng Duan from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Dr Yu Zhang from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The Honorable Mention went to Dr Yinshi Li at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. All of them are 2011 PhD graduates.

HKUST Holds its 19th Congregation Conferring Honorary Doctorates on Four Distinguished Academics and Leaders
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its 19th Congregation today (18 November) and conferred honorary doctorates on four eminent academics and community leaders. Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR Government and HKUST's Chancellor, the Hon Donald Tsang presided over today's ceremony.
HKUST's honorary doctorates are awarded to four outstanding individuals in recognition of their distinguished achievements and contributions. This year's recipients are:
Dr Simon Ip Sik On, CBE, JP, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Stewards of the Hong Kong Jockey Club - Doctor of Laws honoris causa
The Hon Elsie Leung Oi Sie, GBM, JP, the former Secretary for Justice of the Hong Kong SAR Government - Doctor of Laws honoris causa

HKUST Develops Smarter Multi-hop Wi-Fi Network Software Greatly Improved in Signal Strength and Coverage
A research team led by Prof Gary Chan, Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has developed a multi-hop wireless mesh network to greatly improve the data access of Wi-Fi networks. The software of the network LAviNet (Lean Aviation Network) implements a set of innovative channel selection and routing algorithms which effectively avoid traffic congestion and reduce signal interference. With LAviNet, user data rate is measurably increased by more than two times and the signal strength significantly enhanced by 100 times. This tremendously improves wireless data transmission efficiency and coverage. LAviNet has been successfully commercialized and well received by the industry and end users.

HKUST Holds Topping-out Ceremony for HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School Building
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held a topping-out ceremony today at Nansha IT Park for HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School Building, signifying a major milestone for the University's development on the Mainland.
HKUST is committed to fostering collaborations between Hong Kong and the Mainland, especially the Pearl River Delta region in education, scientific research and commercialization. The University has long been actively engaged with governments in Guangdong at provincial, municipal and district levels in discussing and building a collaborative platform. With a generous donation from the Fok Ying Tung Foundation, the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School is HKUST's important base in China and a collaborative innovation and education platform shared between Guangdong and Hong Kong.

20 Elite Business Schools Compete for the Coveted Championship of the Citi International Case Competition 2011
Thammasat University from Thailand took home the championship for the Citi International Case Competition 2011 with an innovative long-term growth strategy for one of the world's busiest independent container terminal operators. The university defeated 19 other outstanding teams from top business schools around the world to take the highest honor in the prestigious annual contest.

HKUST's Dean of Science Prof Nancy Ip Bestowed Knight of l'Ordre National du Mérite
Prof Nancy Ip, Dean of Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has been bestowed Knight of l'Ordre National du Mérite by Mr Arnaud Barthélémy, Consul-General of France in Hong Kong and Macau. Prof Ip is one of a handful of people who have received this decoration in Hong Kong. Knight of l'Ordre National du Mérite was established in 1963 by Charles de Gaulle who was then French President. The French President Nicolas Sarkozy decided to present Prof Ip the title and rank this year in recognition of her scientific contribution to the community, her constant efforts to establish collaborations among France, Hong Kong and Mainland China in the field of science and higher education, and her commitment to their further development.

Kellogg-HKUST EMBA Ranks World's No. 1 for Third Year in a Row
The Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA (EMBA) program remains the world's No. 1 EMBA program, according to the Financial Times 2011 EMBA global rankings released today. This is the third year in a row that it has achieved top status.
Jointly offered by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA program has been in the top 3 since 2005 and was also ranked world's No. 1 in 2007, in addition to its current streak which began in 2009.
The Financial Times 2011 EMBA global rankings tracked the performance of students who graduated in 2008 to take into account their career advancement three years after attaining the EMBA qualification. The success of the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA program is largely attributed to the impressive career track records of the graduates, their diversity and working experience.

HKUST School of Engineering Organizes "Bring Technology to Community" Exhibition
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) School of Engineering is hosting the "Bring Technology to Community" exhibition at Hong Kong Science Museum starting from today till 30 October 2011. The exhibition features the innovative works and research achievements of the School's students, professors and alumni. A majority of the exhibits are showcased to the public for the first time. Admission is free. The School welcomes members of the public to come and visit the exhibition.
The exhibition is one of the celebratory events for the HKUST 20th anniversary. Demonstrating HKUST's commitment to contribute to the society with technology, the School of Engineering organizes this exhibition to bring technology to society and widen the public's horizons on technology. The exhibition also aims to raise the public's awareness of the close connection between innovations and daily lives, and how technology brings convenience to them.
