Chow Tai Fook Cheng Yu Tung Fund Donates $90 million to HKUST to Build a New Research and Academic Building
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today received a $90 million donation from the Chow Tai Fook Cheng Yu Tung Fund for the construction of a Research and Academic Building. It will be named in honor of Dr Cheng Yu Tung in appreciation of his generosity.
As a world-class research university, HKUST seeks innovation and excellence by providing first-class research and teaching facilities so that teachers and students may enjoy a more stimulating environment. To prepare for the introduction of the new 334 education system, HKUST is actively seeking to strengthen its teaching and research facilities. To this end, the University has taken special care to visit the world’s leading research universities to study the design of their facilities, so as to provide a research environment second to none.

CN Innovations Ltd Donates $5 million to HKUST to Support Applied Research
CN Innovations Ltd (CN Innovations), a member of Chung Nam Corporation Ltd, today donated HK$5 million to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in support of the University’s research and development efforts, particularly in the field of nanoscience.
HKUST President Tony F Chan said, “We are immensely grateful to CN Innovations for their generous donation to HKUST. Indeed, CN Innovations is taking the lead among local industries to support research and development at local universities and I believe this exemplary initiative will inspire other local industries to contribute to academia for the benefit of Hong Kong and beyond.”

HKUST Signs MOU with Kuwaiti Ministry of Higher Education
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Higher Education in Kuwait, to strengthen the relationship between both parties in education and scientific research.
The MOU was signed between HKUST President Tony F Chan and Director of Kuwait Cultural Office Dr Ahmad Alathari. Also present at the signing ceremony was His Excellency Bader Al-Tunaib, Consul General, Consulate General of the State of Kuwait.
Under the MOU, both parties will encourage the exchange of scholarships in both technical and professional education. Both parties will also encourage mutual visits of higher education officials, academics and researchers, as well as the interflow of delegations of university students to take part in educational, cultural and sports activities in both countries.

HKUST Students and Alumni Demonstrate Dramatic Talent in Broadway Musical
Over 60 students and alumni of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) demonstrated to full-house audiences that science, engineering and business students can shine bright on the musical stage – not just in their laboratory.
After no more than 19 days of preparation, the students and alumni staged a 3-hour award-winning Broadway musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”.
Said Prof Oliver Lo of HKUST’s Division of Humanities, who directed the production, “I am truly amazed at the talent and commitment that these youngsters had shown. They started from zero three weeks ago, and now they know their dialogue and stage movement by heart. And don’t forget this is all in theatrical English. Yet our students and alumni were not daunted by the enormity of the challenge. This is nothing short of a miracle!”

First State Key Laboratory at HKUST Officially Opens to Advance Research in Molecular Neuroscience
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) officially opens its first national-level laboratory on campus today, to advance the research frontier on molecular neuroscience.
The Ministry of Science and Technology of China has approved the establishment of the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience at HKUST, to build on the existing foundation of excellence in molecular neuroscience at the University.
Professor Nancy Ip, Chair Professor of Biochemistry at HKUST and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been appointed Director of the State Key Laboratory. She will steer the research strategy of the State Key Laboratory, coordinate research projects and oversee its operations.

HKUST Applauds Winners of Engineering Photo Contest
The School of Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today presented prizes to the winners in its first-ever photography contest entitled “Engineered Life in Your Eyes”.
The contest drew enthusiastic response with a total of 775 entries received. The judging panel finally selected 46 winning photos.
The contest, which ran from 20 May to 2 June 2010 on the Engineering School’s Facebook page, aims to raise students’ awareness on the close association between engineering and their daily lives. The contest has two categories: Tertiary Institutions and Secondary Schools. In the tertiary category a total 390 photos were received from 164 contestants and in the secondary category 385 photos were submitted by 215 contestants.

Three Distinguished Leaders Conferred Honorary Fellowships Dr Li Ning Shares International Brand Building Experience
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (Friday) conferred Honorary Fellowships on three distinguished leaders in recognition of their contributions.
The three recipients of the 2010 Honorary Fellowships are: Dr Jack Lau, Dr Li Ning, and Mr James E Thompson.
HKUST Pro-Chancellor Dr the Honorable Sir Sze-Yuen Chung, Council Vice-Chairman Dr Michael Mak, and President Tony F Chan officiated at the conferment ceremony. The three recipients' brief biographies are set out below:

UC RUSAL and HKUST Launch Five-Year Education and Research Joint Project
10 June 2010 – UC RUSAL (SEHK: 486, EuroNext: RUSAL/RUAL), the world’s largest aluminium producer, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), one of the finest and foremost universities in Asia, announce the launch of a five-year joint project aimed at strengthening scientific and educational ties between Russia and Hong Kong. The project will foster joint scientific research, addressing pressing environmental issues and promoting cooperation between young scientists from the two regions. The total sponsorship budget of the project provided by UC RUSAL is USD 1.5 million.
The joint project between UC RUSAL and HKUST will be implemented during the academic years 2010/11 to 2014/15 and will include the following three-tier programme.
