HKUST Ranked No. 1 in Asia for the Second Year in a Row

2012-05-29

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is delighted that the highly reputable Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Rankings: Asia has once again named HKUST the top university in Asia, making it two years in a row.

According to the QS University Rankings: Asia released today, HKUST has maintained its top position in Asia. The University ranked first in the QS Rankings in 2011.

An announcement from QS released today states that HKUST aged just 21 years, tops the 2012 QS University Rankings: Asia league table for the second year in a row. Mr Ben Sowter, Head of Research at QS Intelligence Unit, highlights, “The emergence of Asia’s young, science-focused institutions has been one of the key trends in our regional and world university rankings in recent years.”

HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan says, “HKUST’s rapid rise has its foundation in our clear positioning as a focused elite research/education university with an international outlook, emphasizing interdisciplinary studies, entrepreneurial spirit and innovation. We are very pleased that HKUST is again ranked no. 1 in Asia this year.”

“At the same time, we constantly remind ourselves that our goal is not to achieve high rankings but to achieve our main mission of excellence in research and in educating our students to be professionally competent, morally upright citizens and future society pillars. Rankings could be useful as an instrument to measure our performance and to tell us where we can improve as a young and growing university. Now into our third decade and looking towards the future, we aim to make greater contributions in science, technology, business management and humanities and social sciences, with our top-notch faculty, staff and students, and to assist in the economic and social development of the region,” Prof Chan added.

QS is the world’s leading information specialist in the higher education sector with the mission of fostering educational achievement, international mobility and career development. With almost 500 universities examined and record response levels to its academic and employer surveys, the QS Asian University Rankings 2012 represent the most extensive study of Asian institutions ever conducted. Published for the first time in 2009, the QS University Rankings: Asia is published annually and ranks Asia’s top universities based on relevant criteria including: academic reputation (30%), employer reputation (10%), student / faculty ratio (20%), papers per faculty (15%), citations per paper (15%), internationalization (5%), student exchange inbound (2.5%) and student exchange outbound (2.5%).
