Four Distinguished Leaders Conferred Honorary Fellowship

2007-06-07

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (Thursday) confers Honorary Fellowship on four distinguished community leaders in recognition of their contributions to the University and the community.

The four are: Dr Chan Man-Hung, Mr Lester G Huang, Mr Humphrey Leung Kwong-Wai, and Dr Lawrence Tsi-Kong Wong.

HKUST Pro-Chancellor Dr the Honorable Sir Sze-Yuen Chung, Council Chairman Dr John Chan, and President Paul Chu officiated at the presentation ceremony.

Dr Chan Man-Hung is the Vice Chairman and President of Sino United Publishing (Holdings) Limited whose strategic business thinking is laced with a strong dose of social crusading passion. He is pioneer in reforming and modernizing the book retail business, pumping resources into a digital systems control for his bookstore operations. Commercial Press under his leadership also became the first to venture into Hong Kong’s satellite towns in lock step with its urban sprawl. Dr CHAN is also the first to give the previously dull bookstores a new, snazzy look, setting the same high standards in d^mcor and decoration regardless of a bookstore’s neighborhood.

Mr Lester Garson Huang, a partner of P C Woo & Co, is a dean of practicing lawyers, his first crusade was for the quality of legal education. In a move that foreshadowed the proposed “3-3-4” education system, Mr Huang helped turn a previously 3-year legal education into a 4-year program. That extra year, he firmly believes, has added intellectual breadth and depth to an education that was otherwise narrow or shallow. For a non-educator, he is intimately knowledgeable about cutting-edge educational ideas. His educational activism flows from his unalterable belief that the young are the future of our society. Today, he leads the Law Society of Hong Kong as its President to render his services to our community.

Mr Humphrey Leung Kwong-Wai, Group CEO of Solomon Systech Limited, picked his career in semiconductors after graduation in Electronic Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic. He was in fact the first to establish a world-class, local semiconductor company listed on the main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Under his leadership, Solomon Systech becomes the largest fabless IC company in China and Hong Kong in terms of revenue, and enjoys both international and local reputation with prestigious awards across financial performance, best corporate practices and technological innovations. Personally, Mr Leung was honored as a recipient of the Young Industrialist Award of Hong Kong 2001, the Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award 2003, and the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2004 from the China Semiconductor Industry Association.

Dr Lawrence Tsi-Kong Wong, a former member of the University Council, was appointed the first Chinese CEO of the Hong Kong Jockey Club 11 years ago when the Club was facing a difficult period of economic downturn, competition from outside betting organizations, and customer apathy. Dr Wong’s business shrewdness, standards of excellence and flair turned the Club’s fortunes around, and in the process made him a Hong Kong success story. Perhaps most satisfying for Dr Wong is the fact that the Jockey Club remains a significant force on the charity front and has been for many years the leading philanthropic organization in Hong Kong under his tenure.
