Empowering Our Sustainable Future
As a leading global university guided by the “Future of Living” framework, we recognize the need to operate sustainably. To achieve this goal we empower our members to transform scientific and technological concepts into real-world impact for our campus, our region, and the world.

Nurturing Future Sustainability Leaders
We offer a range of specialized programs that address key sustainability topics.
The Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR) and the Sustainable Green Finance degree program are the first of their kind in Hong Kong. Annually we update our inventory of sustainability courses and assess the level of sustainability exposure our graduates receive. In 2021/22, 95% of our undergraduates enrolled in at least one sustainability-focused course, with 66% taking at least two.

Hands-On Sustainability Training
We strive to bridge the gap between innovative research and societal impact.
Our Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab program supports HKUST members to propose and implement innovative sustainability solutions on our campus.
Demonstrating our commitment in this area, we initiated a joint declaration together with over 15 other leading universities to affirm that Living Labs play a vital role in the sustainable transformation on our campuses.
Our HKUST Connect volunteering program opens doors for students to gain first-hand experiences as they address social issues such as poverty, hunger, health, quality education, and inequalities.

Partnering for Impact
Creating a sustainable future requires a collaborative approach bringing together all sectors including government, industry, universities, and NGOs.
Our annual Climate Adaptation and Resilience Conference (CARE), gathers top-level decision-making bodies from across society to strengthen our city's resilience.
Through our sustainability partnerships and alliances with higher education institutes and industry bodies, we aim to catalyze innovation and champion sustainable practices.

Bringing Sustainability to the Community
Our Academy for Bright Future Young Engineers (ABFYE) provides a student-centered platform to engage high school learners in authentic engineering experiences, such as sustainable engineering, inspiring them to adopt an engineer’s mindset to problem-solving.
MindMatters is an innovative program developed by the Division of Public Policy to train community “lay leaders” in mental health first aid and establish community-based mental health support networks among Hong Kong's major ethnic minorities.
