Biography 

Prof. Kai‐Lung Hui is Acting Dean of Business and Management, Elman Family Professor of Business, and Chair Professor in the Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics, and Operations Management (ISOM) at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He is also the Academic Director of the Kellogg‐HKUST EMBA program. Prof. Hui received his BBA and PhD degrees from HKUST. He started his career at the National University of Singapore followed by City University of Hong Kong. He returned to HKUST in 2008 and has served in variously administrative roles including Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs (2013-2015), Associate Dean for Research (2017-2021), Senior Associate Dean (2021-2024), and Deputy Head and Head of ISOM (2017-2024). He has also served as the Director/Co-Director of the Dual Bachelor’s Degree Program in Technology and Management (2017-2021), BSc Program in Risk Management and Business Intelligence (2019-2021), and MSc Program in Financial Technology (2018-2020), and Academic Director of the HKUST EMBA Program (2021-2023), as well as a member/chair of the promotion and tenure committee at different levels in the University.

Prof. Hui’s research interests include cybercrime economics and policy, fintech, privacy, IT policy, and electronic commerce. His research cuts across information systems, marketing, and economics, and has been published in some of the best journals including Information Systems Research, Management Science, MIS Quarterly, and Journal of Management Information Systems, among others. He served as a Senior Editor for Information Systems Research and is currently serving as an Editor for Journal of Management Information Systems and Senior Editor for Production and Operations Management, all three of which are used in the Financial Times’ business school ranking. He is also a Department Editor of Business & Information Systems Engineering. He ranks among the top 22 in the world, top two in Asia, and top one in Greater China based on publications in Information Systems Research and MIS Quarterly in 2017-2021.

Prof. Hui has provided expert advice and consultancy services to government and private organizations including the Intellectual Property Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government, Insurance Authority of Hong Kong, World Intellectual Property Organization, and Ministry of Law of Singapore. He frequently speaks about digital piracy, cybersecurity, privacy, fintech, and technology policy in events organized by professional organizations in banking, education, finance, insurance, and IT industries. He is also a frequent contributor to public opinion and knowledge sharing in the media.

Prof. Hui has taught undergraduate, MSc, MBA, EMBA, PhD, DBA, and executive courses on cybersecurity and risk management, privacy and information management, fintech, blockchain and cryptocurrencies, big data and analytics, strategic IT management, and competitive business strategy, among others. He is a three-time winner of the prestigious Franklin Prize for teaching excellence in the HKUST Business School.
