To promote the scholarly legacy of Dr. Joseph NEEDHAM through a future community of “Needham Scholars”, HKUST and Joseph Needham Foundation for Science & Civilisation Hong Kong (JNFSC) join hands to launch a Merit Scholarship program to draw high-caliber students to contribute to the field of science, especially in the STEM areas, with a focus on humanity at the same time. 

Dennis CHOW, a graduate of Mathematics in 2018, is a firm believer in learning by doing. And thanks to his outgoing personality and an insatiable appetite for new challenges, throughout his four years at HKUST, the young man made the most of every opportunity provided by the University to build his experiences and skills that set himself apart from his peers, and even outperformed them when they graduated.

Rachel HUANG, a final year student of Global Business and Operations Management, remembers vividly how she was shocked and saddened to see people living in extreme poverty in a drought-hit village in India as she took part in volunteer work to take care of the homeless women and children there. The unforgettable experiences made Rachel, who grew up in Taiwan and has lived a comfortable city life, realize she should never take things for granted. Moreover, it planted the passion in her heart that she wanted to do something to help the needy. “The place we live in is far too safe and comfortable. We can hardly imagine what other people’s lives are like in other corners of the world that are unsecured and unstable,” she comments. “Only when you are in that place, you can feel strongly that there is a totally different way of life. Then you start to think about what I can do for them? And what role can I play in this world?”

Edith Lee has experienced serious heartbreaks when she narrowly missed out on qualifying for world-class archery competitions not only once, but twice. The computer science and engineering student, who is one of the city’s top recurve bow archers, is now taking her gap year before resuming her final year study in September, after her disqualification for the World University Championships and the Asian Games. Edith studied science subjects in secondary school but she admits she was never a top student, so had never dreamed of studying in a university. But in order to follow her idol Korean archer Ki Bo Bae’s path to compete in the World University Archery Championships, she studied extremely hard and was admitted to HKUST in 2015.

This event serves to support the World Mental Health Day (10 Oct) observed by World Health Organization (WHO). We aim at moving forward to build a connected and united HKUST campus among different stakeholders, to arouse awareness on psychological well-being, and to de-stigmatize the sick role of seeking psychological counseling or treatment when needed.

With the support of Union Medical Healthcare, 2018 spring term's Corporate Project challenged students to improve patient journey at General Practice (GP) clinics. The project aims at providing students with hands-on experience in solving complex real business problems and polishing their advanced skills in design thinking and executive communication.

The typical Hong Kong student might be exceptional in academia, but how much do they know about the plight of refugees in a war zone? It’s a central reason why diplomatic and humanitarian ideals are being combined with HKUST’s traditional engineering, business and science strengths in a new collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The alliance is the latest initiative by HKUST Connect to deepen student learning and raise civil awareness by linking up the wider community. With humanitarian and aid policies studies among the relatively less popular disciplines for Asian students, creating a bridge with the ICRC, a neutral and independent humanitarian organization, is a firm step giving our students an opportunity to practice empathy. It also places a public spotlight on the plight of victims in armed conflicts globally.

On 30 & 31 May 2018, 31 Sports Leaders from 15 sports joined the Sports Leader Training Camp jointly organized by the Sports Association, HKUSTSU and Student Affairs Office.
