The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is proud to be the exclusive university partner of the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong & Macau for the Anita Conti Sustainable Innovation Fellowship, under the partnership framework of France-HKUST Innovation Hub. The Fellowship pays tribute to Anita Conti (1899-1997), also known as « la Dame de la Mer » (the Lady of the Sea ) and the first French woman oceanographer and a pioneer in marine ecology, as well as her scientific contribution and commitment to the protection of the oceans. It aims to inspire the next generations of researchers, innovators, and environmentalists to address the challenges of climate change and its impacts on our planet.

香港科技大學（科大）昨日橫空出現一所城寨士多，沒有「龍捲風」也並非「三不管地帶」，卻雲集了科大來自17個國家及地區同學的創意和熱情，在香港七、八十年代的城寨佈景下，交流各方家鄉的獨特文化與集體回憶。 這個為期兩天的「環球文化祭」由科大理學院舉辦，旨在促進本地與國際生的文化交流。今年的活動共設有36個特色攤位，由105位來自 17個國家和地區的同學精心設計，當中更首度邀得來自非洲、阿塞拜疆、哈薩克斯坦、蒙古、尼泊爾、法國、烏茲別克斯坦及英國等地的學生參與，推廣各自家鄉的獨特文化; 包括品嘗法國傳統食品、演奏瑞典民俗樂器、試穿烏茲別克傳統服飾及學習尼泊爾傳統民俗舞蹈等，當然也少不了香港本土的傳統懷舊玩具和小食如眼鏡朱古力、珍寶珠、西瓜波及扭蛋扭卡機等。活動吸引逾千名來自不同文化背景的師生參與，不僅於考試時期為同學帶來放鬆的一刻，更讓學生擴闊國際視野，認識不同文化。 科大國際本科生比例一直名列本港大學之冠。過去數年，科大學士課程每年所錄取的非本地生中，近半來自中國內地以外。除歐、美、澳、非洲及亞洲等地，亦有同學來自「一帶一路」及其它較少來港就讀國家，包括烏茲別克、摩爾多瓦、委內瑞拉和也門等。大學會不時舉辦活動，讓這些來自全球逾40個國家及80多個地區的教職員和學生互相交流，體驗多元文化的魅力。

As the world grapples with challenges such as climate change, pandemics, geopolitical tensions, and dilemmas of the AI revolution, universities stand as fortified citadels of knowledge and innovation. Recognizing that no single institution or discipline can tackle these complex challenges alone, university leaders are increasingly leveraging collective expertise and resources to forge a sustainable, equitable, and brighter future for all. The Global University Presidents & Leaders Summit 2024, held on December 2-3, 2024, in Hong Kong, epitomized this collaborative spirit. Organized by the Hong Kong Association for External Friendship and supported by the University Grants Committee along with nine Hong Kong universities, this landmark event brought together over 50 globally renowned university presidents and leaders, providing a platform to share insights, forge partnerships, and strategize on addressing global challenges effectively.

The School of Business and Management at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) yesterday hosted a forum in Singapore, uniting experts from academia and industries to delve into the vibrant development of the family office and supply chain management (SCM) sectors in the region. This forum aims to foster collaboration and uncover new opportunities in these pivotal industries, strengthening the ties between Hong Kong and the Lion City.  With an esteemed audience consisting of industry practitioners and school alumni in Singapore, the forum served as a dynamic platform for the school to share valuable insights, foster meaningful connections, and embark on new avenues for collaboration. The event also facilitated the school’s engagement with its alumni and the formation of a vibrant network of professionals.

AI technologies are poised to become more humanized in the art scene, according to Professor GUO Yike, HKUST Provost and world-renowned scholar on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning, who shared his thought leadership on the interplay of Generative AI and art at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Summer Davos 2024. Joining Professor Guo at the global event were Professor SHAO Minhua, Head and Chair Professor, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Professor FAN Zhiyong, Chair Professor, Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering — both of whom showcased innovations at this prestigious event— while Professor HUI Pan, Chair Professor of Computational Media and Arts of HKUST (GZ), participated as a member of Global Future Council on the Future of Metaverse. 

In the second episode of the three-part series “Why HKUST?”,  two students from Kazakhstan obtained scholarships to pursue undergraduate studies at HKUST. They have immersed themselves in research projects, internships, and a dynamic campus life, adding up to an outstanding personal profile for future career or further education.

HKUST has been committed to enrolling students from around the world to foster campus diversity and advance internationalization. To continue broadening the non-local student mix, the University introduced a “Counselor Fly-in” program in 2018 to let high school counselors from Central Asia and Middle East have a deeper understanding of what opportunities HKUST can offer to their students. The program continued in March 2019 with some 30 high school counselors from nine Western European countries joining. Here we meet two students from Kazakhstan and Turkey who share with us what brought them to Hong Kong. Fourth-year Biotechnology and Business student Kamila ABDRASSILOVA from Kazakhstan witnessed the increasing number of students from her home country – when she started, there were only seven and now the number has doubled to 14.

Rachel HUANG, a final year student of Global Business and Operations Management, remembers vividly how she was shocked and saddened to see people living in extreme poverty in a drought-hit village in India as she took part in volunteer work to take care of the homeless women and children there. The unforgettable experiences made Rachel, who grew up in Taiwan and has lived a comfortable city life, realize she should never take things for granted. Moreover, it planted the passion in her heart that she wanted to do something to help the needy. “The place we live in is far too safe and comfortable. We can hardly imagine what other people’s lives are like in other corners of the world that are unsecured and unstable,” she comments. “Only when you are in that place, you can feel strongly that there is a totally different way of life. Then you start to think about what I can do for them? And what role can I play in this world?”
