Stepping into the Library, Leaving Footprint on Greenhouse Gas Free Carpet
When HKUST library recently replaced 1,000 meters of old carpeting in the entry lobby, they chose "Cool Carpet" which ensures that the new carpets will cause no harm by offsetting all the greenhouse gases (GHG) associated with the manufacturing, maintenance and end of life management of the carpet tiles.

Getting Wet in the Wild-T&M-DDP Leadership Training Camp
Every summer, Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management (T&M-DDP) holds leadership training camp for all new students to unleash and polish their leadership potential. This year in August, over 50 new Year 1 and Year 2 T&M-DDP students admitted respectively from program-based and school-based admissions joined the leadership training camp at Sai Wan, Sai Kung.

A Virtual Step Forward
If you think the hovering displays in the Iron Man movies are just science fiction, it’s time to think again. Augmented reality (AR) is the next big thing for mobile devices, and HKUST’s System and Media Lab (SysMLab) is at the forefront of its development.
SysMLab researchers, led by director Prof Pan Hui, are building a platform for programmers to develop AR apps for mobile and wearable devices. Since the lab’s inception in January 2013, the focus has been on addressing problems in daily life by providing personalized information in the virtual world.
Taking a bottom-up approach, Prof Hui explained, “we sought to identify and develop major AR components including hardware platforms, software frameworks and display devices.” The team then used technologies such as object tracking and computation offloading to significantly accelerate the development cycle from three months to only one week.

BizInsight@HKUST Seminar Features Nobel Laureate Prof Sir Christopher Pissarides on Brexit Impact
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) hosted the BizInsight@HKUST Seminar today. The Seminar featured Prof Sir Christopher Pissarides, the 2010 Nobel Laureate in Economics and IAS Helmut & Anna Pao Sohmen Professor-at-Large of HKUST, to provide insights into the Brexit impact on global economies.
“The HKUST Business School is a leader in global business education and committed to sharing its research findings and facilitating an informed discussion on topical issues,” said Prof Kar Yan Tam, Dean of the HKUST Business School. “The BizInsight@HKUST Seminar Series provides an excellent opportunity for our faculty to exchange knowledge with the world’s leading scholars and experts from different organizations, with a view to contributing to the economic and social advancement of the region.”

Fosun Vice-Chairman and CEO Mr Xinjun Liang Shares the Group’s Investment Philosophy and Entrepreneurial Spirit at HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series today, featuring Mr Xinjun Liang, Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of China’s leading investment corporation Fosun Group. The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST.
In his talk titled “Fosun’s Investment Philosophy and Entrepreneurial Spirit”, Mr Liang shared how the Hong Kong-listed group has grown from a mainland enterprise with just RMB 38,000 in registered capital, into a world-leading investment group with total asset value exceeding RMB 400 billion. Mr Liang also encouraged HKUST students to engage in industries and embrace challenges in high spirits.
