Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Prof William E Moerner Shares Insights on the Development of Super-resolution Microscopy at HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series on 16 May, featuring Prof William E Moerner, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2014. The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST. In his talk titled “The Story of Single Molecules: How Precise High-resolution Spectroscopy at Low Temperatures Led to Super-resolution Microscopy and Beyond”, Prof Moerner shared with the audience today’s development of super-resolution microscopy since the 1980s when the first optical detection and spectroscopy of a single molecule in the condensed phase was observed.

HKUST Presents Common Core Course Excellence Award
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held the fourth Common Core Course Excellence Award Presentation Ceremony today in recognition of outstanding common core courses. The event highlights the University’s endeavor and commitment to foster a holistic education for undergraduate students. This year’s Excellence Award went to “Developing the Leader in You”, taught by Prof Roger Levermore and Dr Cubie Lau from the Department of Management. The course empowers, informs and motivates fresh undergraduates to see and develop themselves as future leaders through an inspiring combination of knowledge-sharing and self-discovery. It contains not only guest lectures and real-world cases from over 60 leaders across sectors, but also self-reflection sessions, teamwork projects and interactive classes, for students to learn how to lead in accordance with their own unique strengths.

Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM) Students Won the IPO Best Research Award 2015/16
Students of the MPhil/PhD program in Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM) won the Interdisciplinary Programs Office (IPO) Best Research Award 2015/16 which recognizes the outstanding achievements of research students and fosters the overall quality of research education in the University. The award presentation was held on 9 May 2016 to present the prizes.

HKUST Establishes Laboratory on Big Data for Bio Intelligence
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) celebrated the opening of the HKUST The Big Data for Bio Intelligence Laboratory which is dedicated to designing data analytic solutions for big data in biology and healthcare to advance knowledge and improve people’s living. The HKUST The Big Data for Bio Intelligence Laboratory, located in HKUST, will be co-directed by Prof Qiang Yang, New Bright Professor of Engineering, Chair Professor and Head of Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Prof Yang Wang, Chair Professor and Head of Department of Mathematics. The Laboratory aims to become a leading laboratory in the research of big data for biological intelligence and to bridge the knowledge gap between academics and practitioners.

Transforming Lives: An Exhibition for HKUST's 25th Anniversary
To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) holds an exhibition that tells the stories of the University’s impactful inventions and innovative ideas in teaching, research and societal engagement. Titled “Transforming Lives”, the exhibition features science discoveries, objects, videos and materials of over 50 stories under six categories: building capacity, developing talents; enhancing communication technology; innovating materials; solving medical mysteries; sustaining environment, renewing energy; and engaging society, nourishing culture.

CRISPR-Cas9 Genome Engineering Technology Inventor Prof Emmanuelle Charpentier Explores New Opportunities in Biomedical Gene Therapies at HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series on 11 April, featuring Prof Emmanuelle Charpentier, inventor and co-owner of seminal intellectual property comprising the CRISPR-Cas9 technology that is revolutionizing life sciences research. In her talk titled “The Transformative CRISPR-Cas9 Technology in Genome Engineering: Lessons Learned from Bacteria”, Prof Charpentier, Director of Department of Regulation in Infection Biology at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, told the audience the latest development of her discoveries.  She said the RNA-programmable CRISPR-Cas9 system had recently emerged as a transformative technology in biological sciences, allowing rapid and efficient targeted genome editing, chromosomal marking and gene regulation.
