HKUST Pilots Two Smart Waste and Water Reduction Measures to Promote the Development of Eight Sustainable Campuses
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has successfully tested out two carbon reduction measures — an Artificial Intelligence-driven (AI) Reusable Meal Container Lending System and a Water-Saving Smart Showerhead. Both were developed under the leadership of the Jockey Club Sustainable Consumer Programme (JCSCCP) earlier this year and will be fully implemented on the campuses of all eight publicly-funded university members of the Hong Kong Sustainable Campus Consortium (HKSCC) in the autumn of 2023.

Engineering an 'Ironman': How Triathlete Jason Ng Pushes His Boundaries
Training for triathlon is grueling exercise, and even more challenging while studying at university. Jason NG Tai-Long, a HKUST Engineering undergraduate, is defying all the odds. He spends hours in the pool, in the gym, on the bike, running miles on end training several hours every day. This allows him to perform at his best in elite sport as a triathlete, all while dealing with the rigors of being a student. His perseverance and love for the sport paid off, as he won mixed team relay gold at 2023 Asia Triathlon U23 and Junior Championships in Gamagori, Japan, last month, while claiming the bronze medal in the U23 men’s category.

HKUST Tops in Areas of Excellence and Theme-based Research Schemes 2023-24 Funding
Three research projects led by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) were today awarded a combined total of HK$167 million by the Research Grants Council (RGC)’s Areas of Excellence (AoE) Scheme and the Theme-based Research Scheme (TRS) 2023/24. HKUST also leads the highest number of funded projects among all local universities, and has secured the largest single funding amount of HK$87.1 million for one of its projects. The three studies - covering climate change forecast and mitigation in the Greater Bay Area, landslide risk management, as well as regulation of digital assets in Hong Kong, will receive approximately HK$142 million from the RGC.

HKUST Hosts AEARU Summer Institute for Extended Flipped Education 2023
HKUST hosted the Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) Summer Institute for Extended Flipped Education 2023 from July 16-23, bringing together 27 talented undergraduate and master's students from partner institutions. During the one-week intensive program, the students got to experience the best of both worlds - classroom learning and real-world exploration. Students participated in interactive classes and engaging activities around Hong Kong, including visits to some of the city's most iconic landmarks, such as Tai Kwun, Central Market, and the West Kowloon Cultural District. They also enjoyed the scenic Duk Ling harbor cruise and campus orientation.

With over 17,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students from more than 80 countries or regions at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), we pride ourselves as a true cultural melting pot. In the Global Minds@HKUST series, we’ll take a closer look at the unique experiences of some of our international students.  In the first edition of this series, we chat with Yigit SEN, a third-year undergraduate from Turkey studying a dual degree in Computer Science and General Business Management.  Despite his busy schedule, this adventurous young man manages to immerse himself in a range of extracurricular activities both on campus and overseas to broaden his horizons.
