Five HKUST Research Projects Receive Funding from First Batch of RAISe+ Scheme
Five projects from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) were among the first batch of 24 projects awarded funding under the “Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus (RAISe+) Scheme” by the Innovation and Technology Commission of the Government. The new funding will help speed up commercialization of research discoveries that benefit the society, creating a win-win outcome among industry, academic, and research sectors. These research projects, led by professors at the HKUST School of Engineering and School of Science, cover a wide range of topics, including genome-editing, cancer tumor imaging, wastewater treatment, sensing chips, and artificial intelligence robots.  In no particular order, details of the projects:  Project 1: Genome-editing Strategy for Familial Alzheimer’s Disease Therapy

HKUST and Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile Forge Stronger Collaborative Ties
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted a delegation from Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile (ENAC) for insightful discussions on collaboration on July 3. The ENAC representatives met with HKUST's French Professor Stéphane REDONNET of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and had a fruitful discussion on collaborations in PG student mobility programs and joint research. HKUST is the only local university receiving ENAC's Anita Conti Sustainable Innovation Fellowship offered by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong & Macau. The grant aims to promote innovation for a sustainable future and allow the awardees to conduct research related to sustainability in France. Dr. Dajung KIM from HKUST's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering was the Laureate of the Fellowship in 2023 and is now embarking on her faculty career at ENAC as an Assistant Professor.

Rebar Tying Robot – A Knowledge Transfer Odyssey from HKUST to the GBA
 Created by HKUST MPhil student LI Haozhen and his team with the guidance of Dr. LIANG Haobo, Associate Director of the University’s Hong Kong Center for Construction Robotics (HKCRC), the rebar tying robot is one of the University’s four Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury winners at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva held this April. The world-renowned inventions event saw the University scaling new heights with a record-breaking 36 winning projects.

HKUST Cohort Inspires Awe with Game-changing Innovations at WEF Summer Davos 2024
AI technologies are poised to become more humanized in the art scene, according to Professor GUO Yike, HKUST Provost and world-renowned scholar on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning, who shared his thought leadership on the interplay of Generative AI and art at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Summer Davos 2024. Joining Professor Guo at the global event were Professor SHAO Minhua, Head and Chair Professor, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Professor FAN Zhiyong, Chair Professor, Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering — both of whom showcased innovations at this prestigious event— while Professor HUI Pan, Chair Professor of Computational Media and Arts of HKUST (GZ), participated as a member of Global Future Council on the Future of Metaverse.

HKUST Identifies Novel Host Factors that Facilitates SARS-CoV-2 Entry
A research team led by Prof. GUO Yusong, Associate Professor of the Division of Life Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), recently made a novel discovery related to the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19. The team identified new host factors that interact with the receptor binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to promote viral entry. This finding offers valuable mechanistic insights and potential therapeutic strategies against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

HKUST President Attends APRU Meeting to Strengthen Sustainability Collaboration Between Universities
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) President Prof. Nancy IP attended the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) Annual Presidents’ Meeting at the University of Auckland from June 24-26. The three-day meeting gathered university leaders from APRU’s 61 member institutions to explore and exchange insights to tackle climate change challenges rippling through the Pacific Rim. Prof. Ip participated in an insightful panel discussion, exchanging perspectives with other panelists on innovative and transdisciplinary research to address pressing climate change issues. Throughout the discussions, Prof. Ip emphasized HKUST’s commitment to collaborating with universities worldwide to share best practices, innovations, and strategies to achieve sustainability and net-zero carbon emissions.
