Five Form 6 students trained by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have scored the best results ever for Hong Kong at the 40th International Physics Olympiad in Mexico from 12 to 19 July 2009, netting one gold, two silver and three bronze medals. These students are participants in the “Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme” of the Education Bureau, and have won awards at last year’s Hong Kong Physics Olympiad. On completion of a one-year training program provided by HKUST’s Physics Department and having gone through a series of challenges, they were selected to take part in this international competition. This year’s International Physics Olympiad attracted over 70 competing teams from different countries and regions, with each team comprising five members.

The School of Humanities and Social Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will enhance its scope of international collaboration by forming functional ties with University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), University of Virginia, and six top universities in Beijing. The School will also revamp its undergraduate curriculum and include new subjects such as music appreciation, and a major program in Global China Studies. Teaching and research in Energy and Environment will be introduced, and the Advisory Committee will be expanded. This was outlined by Prof James Z Lee, new Dean of Humanities and Social Science.

香 港 科 技 大 學 （ 科 大 ） 本 年 度 內 地 本 科 生 招 生 計 劃 已 經 圓 滿 結 束 。 今 年 共 有 3,215 人 報 考 ， 其 中 1,019 人 獲 邀 參 加 入 學 面 試 ， 最 後 共 有 149 人 確 認 接 受 錄 取 。 繼 2007 年 報 考 科 大 人 數 出 現 高 峰 後 ， 去 年 與 今 年 報 考 科 大 的 人 數 有 所 減 少 。 科 大 國 際 與 中 國 內 地 學 生 及 學 術 事 務 主 任 朱 力 徑 博 士 表 示 ： 數 名 人 數 下 降 的 因 素 很 多 ， 主 要 原 因 是 內 地 學 生 和 家 長 都 逐 漸 認 識 到 ： 科 大 選 拔 嚴 格 ， 被 錄 取 已 經 不 易 ， 獲 頒 入 學 奬 學 金 更 加 困 難 。 由 2007 年 始 ， 特 別 是 去 年 ， 獲 科 大 錄 取 的 同 學 當 中 ， 不 少 人 的 高 考 成 績 ， 足 以 入 讀 內 地 頂 尖 大 學 ， 雖 未 獲 頒 發 入 學 奬 學 金 ， 仍 選 擇 入 讀 科 大 。 此 外 ， 內 地 學 生 亦 明 白 ， 科 大 工 商 管 理 學 院 的 教 學 質 量 優 異 ， 畢 業 出 路 優 勝 ， 而 理 學 院 及 工 學 院 的 教 學 質 量 亦 高 ， 國 際 聯 繫 緊 密 ， 有 利 於 他 們 將 來 到 世 界 頂 級 學 府 繼 續 深 造 。 因 此 ， 今 年 申 請 入 讀 科 大 理 學 院 與 工 學 院 的 人 數 比 例 ， 有 所 上 升 。 數 據 顯 示 ， 今 年 申 請 報 讀 科 大 的 內 地 學 生 質 素 進 一 步 提 升 。 科 大 今 年 在 25 省 市 的 面 試 分 數 線 ， 與 去 年 的 標 準 相 若 ， 達 到 面 試 分 數 線 的 申 請 人 比 率 為 32% ， 比 去 年 的 25% 上 升 7% 。 數 據 亦 顯 示 ， 近 年 申 請 入 讀 科 大 的 學 生 ， 更 踴 躍 參 加 科 大 的 面 試 ， 亦 更 願 意 接 受 科 大 的 錄 取 。 詳 情 請 參 考 附 表 。

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (Friday) conferred Honorary Fellowships on five distinguished leaders in recognition of their contributions. The five recipients of the 2009 Honorary Fellowships are: Mr Paul Chow Man-Yiu, Mr Tim Lui Tim-Leung, Mr E Anthony Tan, Prof Andrew G Walder and Mr Peter Wong Kwok-Keung. HKUST Pro-Chancellor Dr the Honorable Sir Sze-Yuen Chung, Council Chairman Dr the Honorable Marvin Cheung, and President Paul Chu officiated at the conferment ceremony. The five recipients’ brief biographies are set out below:

A Chair Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has developed a ground breaking technology that will revolutionize the design of wireless communications networks, taking the world a step closer towards a truly global mobile community. For this major contribution, he and his research team were honored with the prestigious 2009 IEEE Marconi Award which was presented to the team in an Awards ceremony held on 15 June 2009 at the IEEE flag-ship conference, ICC’09, in Dresden, Germany. Prof Khaled Ben Letaief’s ground breaking research is in the area of “wireless cooperative communications”. The objective is to turn disconnected neighboring wireless terminals into a cooperative system so that multiple transmission nodes can collaborate efficiently with each other in order to significantly extend the cellular transmission range while reducing the overall power consumption.

香 港 科 技 大 學 （ 科 大 ） 與 廣 州 市 南 沙 區 政 府 今 天 （ 星 期 四 ） 簽 訂 科 技 創 新 合 作 協 議 書 ， 推 動 科 大 將 更 多 高 新 技 術 引 入 南 沙 ， 建 設 粵 港 科 技 創 新 合 作 平 臺 ， 促 進 整 個 珠 三 角 地 區 高 新 技 術 產 業 的 發 展 。 成 立 聯 合 實 驗 室 位 於 廣 州 南 沙 的 廣 州 市 香 港 科 大 霍 英 東 研 究 院 與 廈 門 大 學 的 海 洋 環 境 科 學 國 家 重 點 實 驗 室 簽 訂 協 定 ， 成 立 「 近 海 觀 測 與 模 擬 聯 合 實 驗 室 」 ， 重 點 研 究 快 速 發 展 的 經 濟 及 社 會 活 動 給 珠 江 口 及 其 鄰 近 海 域 的 海 洋 生 態 環 境 及 碳 循 環 帶 來 的 影 響 ， 為 區 域 環 境 管 理 策 略 提 供 科 學 依 據 。 科 大 霍 英 東 研 究 院 又 與 華 南 理 工 大 學 環 境 科 學 與 工 程 學 院 共 同 成 立 「 珠 三 角 大 氣 環 境 聯 合 實 驗 室 」 ， 共 同 為 珠 三 角 的 環 境 保 護 出 謀 劃 策 。 科 大 校 長 朱 經 武 教 授 說 ： 「 這 兩 項 協 議 都 體 現 了 強 強 聯 合 、 優 勢 互 補 ， 整 合 國 內 和 香 港 的 科 研 力 量 ， 為 本 地 區 的 大 氣 和 海 洋 環 境 做 出 大 尺 度 、 全 局 性 的 研 究 ， 為 國 家 和 地 區 的 環 保 措 施 及 可 持 續 發 展 提 供 制 定 政 策 的 科 學 依 據 。 」

A charity garage sale with over 160 tables of new and second-hand goods will be held in the car park at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology this Saturday, 6 June 2009, from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. The event is run voluntarily on a non-profit making basis, with all the surplus funds going to charity, an HKUST spokesman said. Apart from the charity element, the garage sale also supports environmental sustainability and the 3-R's (Recycle, Reuse and Reduce). The stall-holders are not limited to HKUST staff, students and alumni, but also include interested members of the public coming as far as from Tung Chung and the South District of Hong Kong Island. In addition to selling goods, the garage sale also collects used items in good condition which people no longer require. These are donated to charities selected by HKUST students. Admission to the garage sale is free, and food, drinks and parking are available.
