Six professors from the School of Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) were recently elected 2012 Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), bringing the total number of IEEE Fellows at HKUST to 25 which is equivalent to 29% of the total number of IEEE fellows in Hong Kong. HKUST will have the highest number of newly elevated IEEE Fellows among universities and institutions in Asia.

Three professors from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have joined the ranks of the nation's best scientific minds. Prof Mingjie Zhang, Chair Professor of the Division of Life Sciences, together with Prof Tongyi Zhang and Prof Ping Cheng, Chair Professor and Professor Emeritus from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, were honored with election to membership of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) for their outstanding scientific achievements. All three newly admitted Hong Kong scholars are HKUST faculty members. Membership in CAS is the highest academic title conferred by the Chinese government for achievements in science and technology research. The election of CAS members takes place biennially, with the total number of new members kept under 60 each time, following stringent nomination, appraisal and election processes. Membership is reserved for scientists in the disciplines of natural sciences, technology and engineering.

Four PhD students from the Schools of Science and Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) sweep all the 2011 Young Scientists Awards under the three categories of Physical / Mathematical Science, Life Science and Engineering Science this year. Established by Hong Kong Institution of Science for its 10th year, the Hong Kong Young Scientist Awards recognize and honor young scientists and engineers in Hong Kong who excel and exhibit great promise in their field of study and promote science and technology development in the region. This year's competition received a total of 65 applications. After rigorous review by individual panels formed by distinguished experts and scholars, Ms Chen Jiefei from the Department of Physics, Mr Alan Wong Siu-lun and Mr Wu Lin from the Division of Life Sciences, and Mr Li Dong from the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering were declared winners of the Awards.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its Charity Garage Sale in the covered car park yesterday (3 December) with over 190 tables selling new and secondhand items. Started in October 1996, the biannual Garage Sale has ranked amongst the University’s leading green initiatives. It was founded by Ms Jean Hudson to fulfill the wish of her then 7-year-old twin daughters to dispose of their unwanted toys and clothes. The sale displays an extensive variety of exciting new and preloved goods including toys, games, books, household items, jewellery, clothes, accessories etc. The stall holders include HKUST students, staff and alumni as well as civic-minded members of the general public.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is hosting a major Forum on science and technology today and tomorrow. Leading experts from academia, industry and government are gathered to discuss the way forward for developing innovation and technology in Hong Kong and strengthening the collaboration between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region. This event, in celebration of the University's 20th Anniversary is co-organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Science and the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences. It is the founding mission of HKUST to spearhead Hong Kong's socioeconomic development through research. This Forum is part of its efforts to lead Hong Kong in search of strategic insights and support to enhance our competitiveness by tapping into opportunities for Mainland-Hong Kong technology collaborations in the context of China's Twelve Five-Year Plan.

Over 3,000 members of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) family comprising Court and Council Members, faculty, staff, students and alumni converged on campus today for the University's 20th Anniversary Celebration Party, featuring a dazzling array of culturally diverse performances presented by faculty and students. To kick off the celebration, HKUST Council Chairman Dr the Hon Marvin K T Cheung and President Prof Tony F Chan dotted the eyes of the dragon for a traditional dragon dance. They were joined by Court Chairman Dr John C C Chan, President Emeritus Prof Chia-Wei Woo as well as serving Vice-Presidents, Deans, representatives of faculty, staff, students and alumni in cake-cutting and toasting ceremonies.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its first presentation of the School of Engineering PhD Research Excellence Award today to recognize the outstanding research achievements of its engineering PhD students and recent graduates. The award is granted to those who have made significant and influential contributions to knowledge in the discipline during their PhD studies at HKUST. The three award recipients are Dr Weiping Wang from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Dr Huanfeng Duan from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Dr Yu Zhang from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The Honorable Mention went to Dr Yinshi Li at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. All of them are 2011 PhD graduates.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its 19th Congregation today (18 November) and conferred honorary doctorates on four eminent academics and community leaders. Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR Government and HKUST's Chancellor, the Hon Donald Tsang presided over today's ceremony. HKUST's honorary doctorates are awarded to four outstanding individuals in recognition of their distinguished achievements and contributions.
