HKUST Launches Hong Kong's First Credit-bearing MOOC and Three New Programs on edX
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will add its first three courses on edX (xConsortium) - one of the two major platforms in the world that offers Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), in its ongoing efforts to promote this next generation learning medium that not only gives any eager learner worldwide an opportunity to take classes provided by top universities, but also make learning more personalized and flexible for students.The University will also offer a pilot scheme this summer for HKUST students to earn credits for their degree study, provided that they complete six weeks of face-to-face course work on campus on top of the MOOC they take. The course will be listed on their transcript and the credits can be counted as degree requirements.The three new courses to launch between June and September are as follows:

HKUST Team Comes First at Global MBA Competition
A team of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) students won the grand prize at a highly challenging MBA competition organized by the Columbia Business School in the US. It was the first time that a team from Hong Kong joined this invitation-only event, which is open only to the top business schools in the world.
Columbia's Global MBA Competition brings together the world's brightest MBA students to test their business aptitude in a two-day contest. The competition consists of three events in three completely different areas: a case analysis, an entrepreneurial pitch, and a negotiation competition.

HKUST School of Engineering Research Excellence Awards Recognize Distinguished Engineering Achievements
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today announced the recipients of the School of Engineering (SENG) Research Excellence Awards 2014. The recipients are outstanding scholars who have made significant discoveries at the forefront of engineering research.
The annual SENG Research Excellence Awards were launched in 2011 to recognize the impact and contributions of the School's faculty members. This year's awards are classified into two categories to encompass faculty members who are in different stages of their academic life. The School currently has about 170 faculty members across its six departments.

Making the Impossible Possible
HKUST graduate Frank Wang is thankful for the academic and support from the University, inspiring him to move forward and become a successful entrepreneur in producing unmanned helicopters with myriad applications from fun to functional.
An electrical and computer engineering graduate, 2006 BEng (ELEC), 2011 MPhil (ECE) at HKUST, Frank manages to pursue his dream of building flying machines. Today, he is the CEO and CTO of DJI Innovations, a company which is now the global leader in developing and manufacturing high-performance, reliable and easy-to-use small unmanned automated helicopters for commercial and recreational use.

HKUST Undergraduate Team Wins International Case Competition
A team of HKUST undergraduate students won the 2014 Scotiabank International Case Competition organized by the Ivey Business School in Canada. Although the case subject was about Canadian agriculture, an unfamiliar topic for Hong Kong students, the team outperformed their peers from other top business schools around the world and impressed the judges with their thoughtful analysis and practical business solution.
Professor Emily Nason, Associate Dean and Director of Undergraduate Programs at the HKUST Business School, said, "Case analysis is one of the key learning experiences provided by our programs. Students are presented with business challenges, which can help them develop business sense and critical thinking skills, and be better prepared for future careers."

Two HKUST Students Receive Top 10 Outstanding Youth Awards
Two students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have won Top 10 Outstanding Youth Awards - a prestigious prize presented by HKSAR Home Affairs Bureau and Commission on Youth to commend their outstanding achievements in personal development, leadership and social services.
Samantha Wing-man Kong, a Year-Three student of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and also Head Student Ambassador, was a dual winner who also scooped the Social Service Award in the commendation scheme. Year-One Science student Phoebe Cheuk-lam Lam was the youngest winner in the Open Category of the Award for eight years' participation in community services.

HKUST Business School hosts International Executive Education Conference
Deans and directors of executive education from more than 50 top universities and business schools around the world gathered at the HKUST Business School today to kick off the 2014 UNICON Directors' Conference. They will engage in discussions about the growing opportunities and challenges for executive education in Asia.
Professor Kalok Chan, Acting Dean of the HKUST Business School, said, "Asia is fast becoming a business education hub, which is reflected by the significant growth of education programs, including executive education. The rise of Asia has created a range of unprecedented opportunities for the industry, and opened windows for collaboration among business schools, not only within the region but also with the rest of the world."

Lenovo Founder Mr Chuanzhi Liu Analyzes China's Latest Manufacturing Growth at UC RUSAL President's Forum
UC RUSAL (SEHK: 486, Euronext: RUSAL/RUAL, Moscow Exchange: RUALR/RUALRS), a leading global aluminum producer, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the UC RUSAL President's Forum today, featuring Mr Chuanzhi Liu, Chairman of Legend Holdings Corporation (Legend Holdings) and Founder and Honorary Chairman of Lenovo. This is the first time Mr Liu gave a speech at an educational institution in Hong Kong. The talk was well attended by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST.
At the Forum, hosted by Prof Tony F Chan, President of HKUST, Mr Liu shared his insights on "The Growth of China's Manufacturers - Talking about Legend".
