The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series today, featuring Mr Xinjun Liang, Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of China’s leading investment corporation Fosun Group. The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST. In his talk titled “Fosun’s Investment Philosophy and Entrepreneurial Spirit”, Mr Liang shared how the Hong Kong-listed group has grown from a mainland enterprise with just RMB 38,000 in registered capital, into a world-leading investment group with total asset value exceeding RMB 400 billion. Mr Liang also encouraged HKUST students to engage in industries and embrace challenges in high spirits.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series today featuring Mr Jay Nibbe, Global Vice Chair – Tax of leading assurance, tax, transaction and advisory services network EY.  The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST. In his talk entitled “Disruption in business: what forces will shape our careers in the coming years?”, Mr Nibbe presented an overview on how disruptive forces such as technology and globalization will shape our careers and lives in the coming years. “Technology is dramatically affecting entire industries,” Mr Nibbe said in his speech.  “Globalization has accelerated trade liberalization and emerging market growth, and demographic shifts through migration, immigration and increased urbanization are having profound effects on workforces and economic development.  Disruption is fundamentally changing the way the world works.”

At HKUST, we encourage our community to care more about the pressing environmental issues, our student Eco-Reps of Sustainable Campus Leadership Program, Rinaldi Gotama took a gap semester and volunteered as a research assistant for Gunung Palung Orangutan Conservation Project in West Indonesian Borneo. In HKUST, many of our students spent a term or more overseas through exchange or internship program, nevertheless, India may not be a popular choice for most students but Homan Yueng, student of Mathematics and Economics chose and got the most out of it. I spent 9 months working as a Business Development Executive in a software product company in Hyderabad, India. My key responsibility was to expand our business into the Greater China Region. We marketed our mobility solutions to IT specialists or CIOs through conference calls.

Augmented Reality (AR) is the next big thing for mobile devices. Researchers at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) are on course of building a novel AR platform for mobile devices, in efforts to facilitate an ecosystem for entrepreneurs and programmers to develop AR programs and applications on mobile and wearable devices. Prof Pan Hui, Director of HKUST-DT System and Media Lab (SyMLab), said the lab resolved to a bottom-up approach in its research to facilitate the development of AR applications on mobile and wearable devices. “We sought to identify and develop major AR components including hardware platforms, software frameworks and display devices, then we enable technologies such as object tracking and process offloading to significantly accelerate the development cycle,” he said.

Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management (T&M-DDP) students Juliana Ko and Raymond Tam together with Ambi Yuen, MPhil student in Electronic and Computer Engineering, jointly invented a smart baby diet tracker to keep track of baby feeding and won many design and start-up competitions.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received a HK$2 million donation from Mr Yeung Wing Yee for the establishment of an entrepreneurship fund to support the startups at their early stage initiated by HKUST students.
