What is your first thought when you hear “quantum”? Inexplicable laws of nature? A technology for pioneering superfast computers? While quantum technology probably sounds very remote for non-scientists, many experts believe the field will eventually revolutionize our lives by enabling us to make smarter decisions in many different areas.

Did you know that the hydrogels found in the contact lenses and cosmetics that many of us use every day are also crucial for the successful regeneration of our bodies’ vital internal organs? For many years, scientists have been meticulously studying the regrowing and repairing of damaged cells, organs, and tissues. A key breakthrough came when researchers established that the high water content of hydrogel polymer network structures’ make them useful for regenerative medicine.

Recently, I had an opportunity to visit JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) and listened to a talk by the scientists and engineers. They designed the cute little robotic helicopter, Ingenuity, which was brought to the Mars surface by the Perseverance rover spacecraft. Ingenuity successfully completed the first powered controlled extraterrestrial flight by a rotary-wing aircraft. My visit was a delightful reminiscence during the ever-glooming pandemic.

The two institutions have signed a Collaborative Research Agreement to pursue six joint projects, and also renewed an MoU originally signed in 2017

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has long had a global vision on campus as it invites – for the first time ever – both local and overseas participants to compete in the 12th annual One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the University, additional prize bonuses will be awarded at the event in a bid to enhance diversity, boost public engagement and better the overall experience of the participants.

In the finale of the Smashing the Glass Ceiling series, Hong Kong-based artist Vivian Ho (HKUST MBA Alumna 2018) reflects on her journey in the art world and how she navigates the local art scene as a woman. I was judged by the boss of a well-known gallery saying he wouldn't invest in a young female artist.  One of Vivian Ho’s earliest encounters with the art world back in Hong Kong in 2012 after returning from studying art at Wesleyan University in the United States was less than positive.  “I approached a well-known gallery and the boss was like: ‘Why should I invest in a young female artist when she’s just going to get married in the future and stop being an artist?’ I had just come from this transgender-friendly campus, and was now hearing a man judging me based on whether I was going to get married off.”
