Chan Kai Ho, Hercules, a Risk Management and Business Intelligence (RMBI) Year 4 student, won the "Best Student Invention Award" at the Hong Kong Information and Communication Technology Award 2017 with a mental health app "VOID".

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted its annual Underwater Robot Competition and a record high 300 students from 42 different primary and secondary school signed up for the four-day event. As part of the University’s effort to promote inclusion and robotics education among the wider community, the Competition invited students from mainstream schools, students with special educational needs (SEN), physical disability, as well as ethnic minorities to take part and make their own inventions.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held the largest student-driven hackathon in Asia from April 21-23, 2017, with more than 600 participants coming from various local and overseas universities. The HKUST hackathon is a creativity-to-reality platform which brings together like-minded youths from different academic backgrounds to develop product prototypes, build friendships, and exchange ideas with industry experts. This year’s edition added a new hardware component which challenges the participants to bring their skills to a whole new level—all participating teams had to come up with a hardware solution to tackle within 48 hours. For contestants joining the software hackathon, they were required to work out a software solution within 24 hours under the themes of Gaming, Economy, Healthcare and Transportation.

Committed to developing an environmentally-friendly campus, HKUST, a world-class research university on science and technology, aims to take a leadership role in demonstrating and promoting sustainability to the wider community. A notable example is the seawater-cooled central chilling system adopted by HKUST from its earliest days to provide air-conditioning for the main Academic Building. This pioneering technology has since been extended to the new eight-story Cheng Yu Tung Building (CYT) by expanding the capacity of the original chiller plant to create a district cooling system, thereby maximizing efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint.
