A research team led by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has discovered how carboxysomes, carbon-fixing structures found in some bacteria and algae, work. The breakthrough could help scientists redesign and repurpose the structures to enable plants to convert sunlight into more energy, paving the way for improved photosynthesis efficiency, potentially increasing the global food supply and mitigating global warming. Carboxysomes are tiny compartments in certain bacteria and algae that encase particular enzymes in a shell made of proteins. They perform carbon fixation, which is the process of converting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into organic compounds that can be used by the cell for growth and energy. Scientists have been trying to figure out how these compartments put themselves together.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has made remarkable progress at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, showcasing outstanding achievements and surpassing previous records with 36 teams winning a total of 36 awards. These include the Prize of the Chinese Delegation for Invention and Innovation, four Gold Medals with Congratulations of the Jury, and multiple Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals.  

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is investing up to HK$40 million to upgrade 30% of its total parking space with charging capability and related software support for electric vehicles (EV).  The initiative aims to cultivate a sustainable commuting habit and supports emission reduction goals in the HKUST 2028 Sustainability Challenge.HKUST is set to become the most EV-friendly university in Hong Kong with the completion of the EV charging infrastructure enhancement project, which will see approximately 360 parking spaces on campus fitted with medium EV chargers, providing an output power of no less than 7kW. The initiative not only supports the HKSAR Government's Roadmap on Popularization of EVs, but also accelerates opportunities to reduce emissions from University-owned vehicles and indirect emissions from commuting. 

All 19 HKUST teams on the delegation have won a total of 20 awards.

With so many in-person conferences and trade shows being canceled or moved online due to COVID-19, countless entrepreneurs including Justin CHAN, co-founder and CEO of biotech startup Gense Technologies, specializing in wearable wristband for hand gesture recognition, are forced to make pitches to investors, partners, and customers virtually to help their companies grow. Unfortunately, most of them are clueless about how to make a great first impression in online meetings, so HKUST’s Office of Knowledge Transfer and Entrepreneurship Center stepped in to help them develop relevant skills.

The HKUST-Sino One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2020 has seen a record high number of participating teams at its 10th anniversary this year.  Three winning teams comprising students, faculty and alumni of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will compete with finalists from seven other regions, including Macau, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Zhongshan and the Yangtze River Delta, in the Grand Final to be held later this year.Hosted online for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition this year attracted 151 participating teams - 29% more than the previous year and the highest in a decade.

Three teams comprising students, alumni and staff of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) stood out among over 100 competing teams and garnered the top three prizes in the HKUST-Sino One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2019 (competition).  They will compete with the finalists from six different cities in the Grand Final to be held in Nansha in September. 

Three teams comprising HKUST students, alumni and their international peers have won over 100 contesting teams to gain the top three prizes of the HKUST-Sino One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2018.  They will compete with the finalists from six different cities in the Grand Final to be held at the University’s Fok Ying Tung Research Institute, Nansha in August.
