HKUST Scholars Honored as RGC Senior Research Fellow and Research Fellows for Outstanding Research Achievements
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has achieved notable achievements in the Research Grants Council's (RGC) Senior Research Fellow Scheme (SRFS) and Research Fellow Scheme (RFS) for the 2026/27 exercise, with three distinguished scholars receiving the fellowship awards. The honors recognize their pioneering research in frontier fields, including electrosynthesis, quantum materials, and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), as well as their exceptional contributions to driving impactful scientific breakthroughs and advancing the frontiers of knowledge.

Four HKUST Scholars Elected as ACM Fellows 2025 for Outstanding Research Achievements in Computer Science
Four scholars from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have been honored as Fellows of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world’s largest professional organization in computer science. ACM has named 71 new Fellows globally this year, and among the 12 Fellows based in Asia, four are from HKUST.HKUST’s honourees include Prof. Tim Kwang-Ting CHENG, Vice-President for Research and Development, Chair Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and Department of Computer Science and Engineering; Prof. Jiaya JIA, Chair Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Director of the Von Neumann Institute; Prof. Ke YI, Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering; and Prof. Hui XIONG, Associate Vice-President (Knowledge Transfer) and Chair Professor of the Thrust of Artificial Intelligence at HKUST (Guangzhou).

Prof. GUO Yike Elected as International Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering
Prof. GUO Yike, Provost and Chair Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been elected as an International Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the Information and Electronics Engineering Division. The CAE is the nation's highest academic institution in engineering sciences and technology, and membership is considered as the highest lifelong academic honor in the field.

HKUST Holds Eighth Inauguration Ceremony of Named Professorships to Honor Faculty Members' Outstanding Academic and Research Achievements
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today held the Eighth Inauguration Ceremony of Named Professorships to honor seven outstanding faculty members and acknowledge the generous support of their donors and supporters in promoting HKUST's dedicated pursuit of academic and research excellence. HKUST’s Prof. Tim Cheng Receives Prestigious ACM SIGDA Pioneering Achievement Award
Prof. Tim Kwang Ting CHENG, Vice-President for Research and Development and Chair Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Director of the AI Chip Center for Emerging Smart Systems at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has recently been awarded the esteemed Pioneering Achievement Award 2025 from the Special Interest Group on Design Automation of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM SIGDA), the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society. Prof. Cheng is only the second scholar from Asia to receive this accolade since its inception.

Professor LUK Kam-Biu Elected 2024 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science
Professor LUK Kam-Biu, IAS Paul C W Chu Professor, has been elected 2024 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for his 'distinguished contributions to particle physics, particularly the leadership of experiments that have shed new light on CP violation and neutrino oscillations'. The AAAS is one of the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of scientific journals. It recognizes the extraordinary achievements of scientists, engineers and innovators across disciplines through its AAAS Fellows Program. All new Fellows will be inducted in AAAS’ Fellows Forum where they will be presented with a certificate and a blue and gold rosette pin representing science and engineering.

HKUST Attracts Nearly 100 New Scholars to Drive Strategic Development
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has welcomed nearly 100 accomplished scholars from a dozen countries and jurisdictions since the launch of its global recruitment campaign in October 2022, boosting the University’s efforts in teaching, research and innovation across different strategic areas.
Echoing the government’s talent attraction initiatives as announced in Chief Executive John Lee’s maiden Policy Address back in 2022, Prof Nancy IP, who assumed the role of HKUST President in tandem, implemented several recruitment measures, including the '30 for 30' talent acquisition campaign to hire renowned academics in strategic research areas.
