Partnership between industry and the academia will play a critical role in underpinning the new economy as governments in leading economies turn to scientific and technological research as an engine of growth in the face of financial tsunami, according to Prof Matthew Yuen, Acting Vice-President for Research and Development at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Speaking at a technical conference in Taiwan - the AMD Technology Forum and Exhibit, Prof Yuen noted that one highly unanticipated outcome of the financial tsunami is that governments turn to increasing research funding to enhance their competitiveness. The G8 countries are pumping extra cash into areas such as energy exploration and medical research. He said that the recent G20 meeting in Pittsburgh epitomized the dawn of the New Economy as the globalized G20, evolved from G8, was designated as the premier forum for international economic cooperation.

香 港 科 技 大 學 副 校 長 黃 玉 山 教 授 今 天 （ 2009 年 10 月 16 日 ） 表 示 ： 香 港 的 年 青 人 往 往 只 看 到 科 學 的 「 工 具 價 值 」 ， 而 忽 略 了 科 學 的 「 精 神 價 值 」 。 「 在 我 們 學 校 的 課 程 裡 ， 除 了 涉 獵 具 體 的 科 學 知 識 外 ， 更 應 該 在 同 學 們 心 中 樹 立 科 學 的 精 神 價 值 ， 使 我 們 對 科 學 能 夠 有 一 個 更 全 面 、 更 確 切 的 理 解 ， 」 黃 教 授 說 。 黃 玉 山 教 授 今 天 出 席 博 愛 醫 院 八 十 周 年 鄧 英 喜 中 學 建 校 十 周 年 紀 念 儀 式 時 ， 向 全 校 師 生 作 出 以 上 呼 籲 。 黃 教 授 表 示 ： 科 學 對 人 類 的 價 值 大 概 可 以 分 為 「 工 具 價 值 」 與 「 精 神 價 值 」 。 科 學 的 「 工 具 價 值 」 很 明 確 ， 它 經 常 可 以 很 具 體 地 改 善 我 們 物 質 的 生 活 。 我 們 身 邊 的 許 多 重 要 用 品 及 技 術 ， 比 如 電 腦 、 互 聯 網 、 遺 傳 工 程 、 核 電 、 無 線 電 話 、 電 視 等 ， 都 是 近 幾 十 年 才 發 明 的 新 生 事 物 。 高 錕 教 授 發 明 的 光 纖 ， 就 是 一 個 很 好 的 例 子 ， 沒 有 光 纖 ， 就 沒 有 今 天 的 衛 星 通 訊 ， 也 就 沒 有 今 天 的 互 聯 網 。 假 如 不 是 因 為 科 學 為 人 類 帶 來 這 些 創 造 及 發 明 ， 今 天 我 們 的 生 活 及 工 作 就 不 可 想 像 。
