The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology officially signed agreements today with the Guangzhou Municipal Government and Guangzhou University to establish Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST (GZ)), marking an important milestone in the University’s advancement.  HKUST (GZ) will help steer frontier development of HKUST in education, science and technology, business and management as well as knowledge transfer, adding forces to Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA) which are gaining traction in innovation.

Researchers at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has uncovered a century-old mystery on marine benthos organisms, which not only leads to the finding of a non-toxic anti-fouling coating that could help the shipping industry saves fuel consumption, but also opens the gateway for future studies that could remap the marine ecosystem. Prof Qian Peiyuan, Chair Professor of the Division of Life Science, won second-class honor of the prestigious 2016 Natural Science Award from the State Council, for his discovery of biofilm’s impact on the initial colonization of marine benthos – organisms that live on or near the seabed such as corals and shells.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Guangzhou Municipal Government on education and science collaborations. Guangzhou is a major city in China. The Outline of the Plan for the Reform and Development of the Pearl River Delta (2008-2020) approved by the State Council of People's Republic of China stated that the development of Guangzhou has been included in the national strategic plan. HKUST is a top-notch research university recognized internationally in the pursuit of excellence.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held a topping-out ceremony today at Nansha IT Park for HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School Building, signifying a major milestone for the University's development on the Mainland. HKUST is committed to fostering collaborations between Hong Kong and the Mainland, especially the Pearl River Delta region in education, scientific research and commercialization. The University has long been actively engaged with governments in Guangdong at provincial, municipal and district levels in discussing and building a collaborative platform. With a generous donation from the Fok Ying Tung Foundation, the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School is HKUST's important base in China and a collaborative innovation and education platform shared between Guangdong and Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today marked the start of construction of the main building of the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School in Nansha, Guangzhou. "Today's ceremony marks an important milestone in the development of the Fok Ying Tung Graduate School. We are moving one more step forward in boosting the cooperation between academia and industry between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta," said HKUST President Tony F Chan at the construction commencement ceremony.

香 港 科 技 大 學 （ 科 大 ） 本 年 度 內 地 本 科 生 招 生 計 劃 已 經 圓 滿 結 束 。 今 年 共 有 3,215 人 報 考 ， 其 中 1,019 人 獲 邀 參 加 入 學 面 試 ， 最 後 共 有 149 人 確 認 接 受 錄 取 。 繼 2007 年 報 考 科 大 人 數 出 現 高 峰 後 ， 去 年 與 今 年 報 考 科 大 的 人 數 有 所 減 少 。 科 大 國 際 與 中 國 內 地 學 生 及 學 術 事 務 主 任 朱 力 徑 博 士 表 示 ： 數 名 人 數 下 降 的 因 素 很 多 ， 主 要 原 因 是 內 地 學 生 和 家 長 都 逐 漸 認 識 到 ： 科 大 選 拔 嚴 格 ， 被 錄 取 已 經 不 易 ， 獲 頒 入 學 奬 學 金 更 加 困 難 。 由 2007 年 始 ， 特 別 是 去 年 ， 獲 科 大 錄 取 的 同 學 當 中 ， 不 少 人 的 高 考 成 績 ， 足 以 入 讀 內 地 頂 尖 大 學 ， 雖 未 獲 頒 發 入 學 奬 學 金 ， 仍 選 擇 入 讀 科 大 。 此 外 ， 內 地 學 生 亦 明 白 ， 科 大 工 商 管 理 學 院 的 教 學 質 量 優 異 ， 畢 業 出 路 優 勝 ， 而 理 學 院 及 工 學 院 的 教 學 質 量 亦 高 ， 國 際 聯 繫 緊 密 ， 有 利 於 他 們 將 來 到 世 界 頂 級 學 府 繼 續 深 造 。 因 此 ， 今 年 申 請 入 讀 科 大 理 學 院 與 工 學 院 的 人 數 比 例 ， 有 所 上 升 。 數 據 顯 示 ， 今 年 申 請 報 讀 科 大 的 內 地 學 生 質 素 進 一 步 提 升 。 科 大 今 年 在 25 省 市 的 面 試 分 數 線 ， 與 去 年 的 標 準 相 若 ， 達 到 面 試 分 數 線 的 申 請 人 比 率 為 32% ， 比 去 年 的 25% 上 升 7% 。 數 據 亦 顯 示 ， 近 年 申 請 入 讀 科 大 的 學 生 ， 更 踴 躍 參 加 科 大 的 面 試 ， 亦 更 願 意 接 受 科 大 的 錄 取 。 詳 情 請 參 考 附 表 。

國 家 科 技 部 國 際 合 作 司 與 南 沙 資 訊 科 技 園 今 天 於 科 技 大 學 簽 訂 合 作 意 向 書 ， 以 加 強 雙 方 在 中 醫 藥 及 其 它 領 域 的 研 發 合 作 。 合 作 意 向 書 由 國 家 科 技 部 國 際 合 作 司 靳 曉 明 司 長 ， 及 廣 州 南 沙 資 訊 科 技 園 有 限 公 司 董 事 長 霍 震 寰 先 生 簽 訂 ， 並 由 全 國 政 協 副 主 席 、 國 家 科 技 部 萬 鋼 部 長 、 霍 英 東 基 金 會 主 席 霍 震 霆 先 生 及 香 港 科 技 大 學 校 長 朱 經 武 教 授 作 見 證 。 根 據 合 作 意 向 書 ， 南 沙 資 訊 科 技 園 與 國 家 科 技 部 國 際 合 作 司 建 立 夥 伴 關 係 ， 共 同 支 援 國 際 科 技 合 作 ， 並 根 據 國 家 科 技 部 的 統 一 安 排 和 南 沙 資 訊 科 技 園 的 實 際 情 況 ， 以 科 技 部 牽 頭 實 施 的 《 中 醫 藥 國 際 科 技 合 作 計 畫 》 等 為 重 點 ， 扶 持 中 醫 藥 及 其 他 領 域 的 創 新 科 技 的 研 發 和 產 業 化 。 霍 英 東 集 團 於 未 來 五 年 內 ， 將 繼 續 支 持 南 沙 資 訊 科 技 園 開 展 與 中 醫 藥 及 其 他 領 域 的 科 學 技 術 研 究 相 關 的 硬 體 建 設 與 發 展 ， 包 括 香 港 科 技 大 學 霍 英 東 研 究 院 的 科 研 實 驗 大 樓 、 宿 舍 及 輔 助 設 施 。 目 前 ， 建 築 面 積 約 21,000 平 方 米 的 宿 舍 樓 已 開 始 施 工 ， 預 計 明 年 9 月 可 交 付 使 用 。 該 樓 建 成 後 將 可 容 納 600 人 住 宿 。 霍 英 東 研 究 院 大 樓 預 計 明 年 3 月 動 工 ， 2010 年 3 月 可 交 付 使 用 。 屆 時 南 沙 資 訊 科 技 園 的 總 建 築 面 積 將 達 11 萬 平 方 米 。
