HKUST Enhances Promotion on STEM Education Launches STEM@HKUST One–stop Online Platform
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is enhancing its efforts in promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education in Hong Kong.  With the support of its faculty, staff, students and alumni, HKUST has recently launched an interactive platform to help spark junior high students’ inquisitiveness and support local teachers in teaching STEM subjects in Hong Kong.

Propelling Hong Kong’s Future Scientists Forward
Staying ahead in an increasingly hyper-competitive global playing field requires sharp observation and analytical thinking, and with that, the ability to think critically and execute an experiment is equally important. To encourage Hong Kong’s budding science student to go beyond their textbooks and demonstrate their mastery of the biology concepts via their problem-solving skills, HKUST is hosting Hong Kong’s first biology competition for senior secondary students: The Hong Kong Joint-School Biology Olympiad (HKJSBO).

HKUST Underwater Robot Competition promotes STEAM education to youngsters from a wide spectrum
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted its annual Underwater Robot Competition and a record high 300 students from 42 different primary and secondary school signed up for the four-day event. As part of the University’s effort to promote inclusion and robotics education among the wider community, the Competition invited students from mainstream schools, students with special educational needs (SEN), physical disability, as well as ethnic minorities to take part and make their own inventions.

HKUST School of Engineering Holds its First Entrepreneurship Camp for Secondary School Students
The School of Engineering (SENG) of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) successfully organized its first-ever Technology Leadership and Entrepreneurship Youth Camp for secondary school students from 8 to 12 August. The 5-day camp provides the participants a broad overview and understanding of entrepreneurship and enables them to have a taste of entrepreneurship through a team project to formulate the business plan of a technology product.

HKUST Hosts Underwater Robot Competition for Junior Students and Students with Special Education Needs
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is committed to the research and construction of robots and autonomous systems, in order to provide primary and secondary school students a chance to participate in the making of robots, HKUST invited students from Primary 4 to Form 3, as well as those with special education needs (SEN), to join an underwater robot competition at HKUST. A team of female students and a team with SEN members won the champion and the first runner-up. HKUST Center for Global and Community Engagement, which co-organized the competition with School of Engineering, School of Business and Management, School of Science, School of Humanities and Social Science and Interdisciplinary Programs Office, recruited 27 student mentors to lead a 2-day workshop for 18 participating teams, teaching them basic skills in robot making.

HKUST to Launch Its First Summer Institute for Senior Secondary School Students
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will launch its first Summer Institute to provide to Secondary 4 and 5 (Grades 10 and 11) students with 27 credit-bearing courses offered by its four Schools - Science, Engineering, Business and Management, as well as Humanities and Social Science. Prof Kar Yan Tam, HKUST Associate Provost and Dean of Students, said, "Apart from providing quality education to undergraduates and postgraduate students, HKUST is also keen on providing senior secondary school students with interesting, useful and easy-to-comprehend courses in various subjects. The students will also have an early experience of university life and even get a taste of how university professors deliver lectures."

HKUST Professor Coaches High School Students on Creating Multi-image Panoramas of HKUST Campus
Over 50 senior high school elite students from 8 local and international schools have just participated in "The Making of the World's Largest Digital Photo Workshop" organized by the School of Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The Workshop was conducted by Prof Pedro Sander, Assistant Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, who made a global record-breaking achievement in December 2010 when he created the world's largest digital photo depicting his hometown city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. <http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/58857/>

Maryknoll Convent School Comes First in Secondary Schools Bridge Demonstration Competition 2011
The Civil and Environmental Engineering Students' Society of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held today the final round of the Secondary Schools Bridge Demonstration Competition 2011, in which Maryknoll Convent School won the championship. Meanwhile, Carmel Pak U Secondary School won the Best Presentation Award. The aim of the Competition is to promote the interest among secondary school students in the design and construction of civil engineering structures. Each team is required to build a small scale model of a suspension bridge that can withstand a weighted trolley running across it from a height. The team with the strongest bridge will gain the highest score. Judging is also based on each team's presentation about their experience in building the bridge. The two other schools that made it to the final round were Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College and St Stephen's College.
