3 Student representatives from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) recently participated in the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) Youth Forum 2023, hosted by the United Arab Emirates University from March 12-18.   Under the theme “Uniting for a Sustainable Future: Asian Youth in Action,” the forum gathered 43 students from 12 leading universities across Asia. Through interactive workshops, speeches and discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of the various sustainability issues affecting the region.     HKUST students also had the chance to interact and exchange with students from diverse backgrounds and experienced the vibrancy of Asian cultures firsthand during the forum. As a pioneering global university, HKUST is committed to empowering the next generation of change-makers who will chart the course for a sustainable future.  

Ice surfaces have a thin layer of water below its melting temperature of 0℃. Such premelting phenomenon is important for skating and snowflake growth. Similarly, liquid often crystallizes into a thin layer of crystal on a flat substrate before reaching its freezing temperature, i.e. prefreezing. The thickness of the surface layer usually increases and diverges as approaching the phase transition (such as melting and freezing) temperature. Besides premelting and prefreezing, whether similar surface phenomenon exists as a precursor of a phase transition has rarely been explored.

The agreements’ aims include developing a smart campus and accelerating the evolution of a digital government to support Hong Kong’s into a smart society.

In celebration of International Women’s Day 2023, we have asked our staff and students to share their take on society’s expectations for men and women.

A research team from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has developed the world’s most productive chemical synthesis which could yield antibiotic anthracimycin and anthracimycin B that is 63 times more than current method.  The breakthrough greatly advances the development of anthracimycin-based antibiotics to combat the deadly bacteria infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria and even superbugs.

“More women and girls in science equals better science.” This is the simple equation proposed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres during February’s International Day of Women and Girls in Science.While women remain underrepresented in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the last decade has seen more and more ambitious female students enter and advance in traditionally male-dominated technical professions. Below, we speak to three promising young women who have benefited from HKUST’s pioneering WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) scholarship’s aim of enabling top caliber female students to realize their STEM dreams. Striving to make their marks in fields of aerospace engineering, physics, and computer science, all three WISE students are an inspiration for younger girls who wish to use technology and innovation to positively impact our world.A WISE Move for Taking Off

For many of us, the prospect of soothing our tired bodies and minds under a long hot shower is a temptation just too good to resist. Students needing to unwind while stressed out during exam season are an excellent example. However, the longer we linger in the shower, the more water simply spirals down the drain. And the question is - Have we ever tried to understand how much water we waste when showering?  “I used to spend 30 - 40 minutes showering every day,” says Ann, a Year 2 Engineering student from UG Hall V. While many experts argue showers lasting over 10 minutes are excessively wasteful, very few of us worry because easy access to safe and clean tap water is something we take for granted. The new showerheads have helped cut around five minutes off my daily shower times.
