The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) launches the first Air Quality Research Supersite to enhance air quality research and to tackle air pollution problems in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta. With a HK$9 million Special Equipment Grant from the University Grants Committee and a HK$6 million grant from the Environmental Conservation Fund, the Supersite enables real-time characterization of ambient particulate matter (PM) in the air to strengthen understanding of the nature and sources of fine particles.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced the winners of the HKUST 2011 Entrepreneurship Competition. Wah Kin Holdings Ltd, with its hair-testing technology, clinched the championship, while LEDoS, Allegro IQ and iFlight Technology won the first, second and third runner-up trophies. The total awards offered by this Competition amounted to HK$1 million.

The School of Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has held its first professional development day for secondary school teachers, with the objective of providing teachers with insights into innovative technology. Over 70 science teachers from 6 secondary schools under the English Schools Foundation (ESF), Hong Kong's largest international schools network, participated in this full-day event on HKUST campus. The teachers were first welcomed by Provost Prof Wei Shyy, followed by a presentation on the School of Engineering by Dean Khaled Ben Letaief. Teachers were then divided into two groups - Physical Sciences and Life Sciences - to attend half-hour inspirational talks delivered by faculty members on topics like "The New Mobile Generation", "Terahertz Imaging", "Information Visualization" and "Drug Delivery Technology", "Green Building" "Neuro Network Computing", "Wind Energy" and "Hygiene Monitoring: Smart Coating".

The School of Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the College of Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Korea, have reached an agreement for academic and research collaborations, under which the two institutions will establish a joint degree PhD program allowing students to conduct academic exchange at both universities. The 4-year program requires students to spend 2 years each at HKUST and POSTECH. Each student will be assigned two faculty advisors, one from each institution, based on their research interests. The advisors and their student will then develop an academic plan together, for approval by the department heads of both institutions, before the student commences his or her study. Graduates of the program will become alumni of both institutions. The first cohort of students is expected to be admitted in Fall 2012 at the earliest.

A group of local and international students at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have organized a Talent Quest to showcase the multifaceted talents within the student community. This event is one of the five winners in the recently-launched President's 1-HKUST Student Life Awards, aimed to enrich campus life and promote cultural exchange. The nine performances selected for the final round encompassed not only individual and group singing, but also guitar and Chinese classical guzheng recitals as well as ballet. The participants included students from Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, India and other overseas countries. The championship was captured by Anton Cheung Ho-Yu who staged a breathtaking beat-boxing performance, combining the sounds of Chinese and Western musical instruments with talking and singing. His immaculate skill won rounds of thunderous applause from the audience.

As a highlight of the 20th anniversary celebration of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), The Intimacy of Creativity presents world-famous musicians from overseas who will play and discuss new music with world-famous and emerging composers. This event is hosted by HKUST's School of Humanities and Social Science (SHSS). The Intimacy of Creativity is the first-of-its-kind series of music workshops and concerts in Hong Kong. In line with HKUST's commitment to nurturing all-rounded global leaders, SHSS is presenting this event as part of its music and humanities education research project. The Intimacy of Creativity introduces a new perspective in appreciating music by showcasing the creative process of a new work. By exposing HKUST students to this unique experience, the goal is to develop innovative and imaginative thinkers.

HKUST Business School students raised over HK$57,000 from a charity run on campus on 18 April to support the Hong Kong Red Cross Japan Earthquake 2011 relief work. The fundraising event was one of the initiatives of the HKUST Service Learning Day held on 14-18 April. It also marked the finale of a series of competitive social activities organized for the year-round Business Cohort Cup Championship. Dubbed the "Turkey Run", the 1.5 km race with three checkpoint challenges attracted business undergraduates from ten Cohort teams to run in colourful turkey costumes of their original creative design. They were joined by a faculty team from the HKUST Business School, led by Dean Leonard Cheng, which also dressed in turkey costumes to participate in the competition. Each team had pledged to raise a minimum of HK$1,000 charity donation.

Over 700 students and staff members of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will, over the next 4 days, render volunteer service in 40 projects, serving visually and hearing impaired people, underprivileged and sick children, senior citizens who are homeless or living alone, ethnic minority children, and even abandoned animals. The projects also include anti-drug activities, hospital visits, and environmental programs. At today's kick-off ceremony, Hong Kong Spirit Ambassador 2010 Mr Wayne Chau shared his experience of metamorphosis - from a child in a poor village in Guangxi to an entrepreneur. Mr Chau is committed to community service and has founded a charitable organization called The Outstanding Givers. Mr Chau is also an HKUST alumnus graduating from the Computer Science Department.
