HKUST to Build the First Quantum Optics Camera in Greater China to Advance Knowledge in Astrophysics and Cosmology
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will build a new kind of camera – using a new approach of quantum optics to detect previously undetectable signals from billions of light years away. The camera is set to help solve unanswered questions in astrophysics and cosmology, such as how light originates and varies around the black hole, in the hope of deciphering information emitted from there.

Opening of Karen Lee Student Mentoring Center to Foster Supportive Culture
School of Business and Management of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) celebrated the opening of the Karen Lee Student Mentoring Center (“Center”), which is purpose-designed for student mentoring activities and promoting a supportive and caring culture on campus.
The Center is named after the late Dr. Karen LEE, a visiting scholar and later an Adjunct Associate Professor who was a faculty member at the HKUST Business School between 2008 and 2014. A beloved and dedicated member of the School, Dr. Lee actively involved in developing undergraduate student skills and recognized the value of mentoring in helping them identify their personal and professional goals.

HKUST Joins Hands with APRU to Examine Transformation of Work in Asia-Pacific
The School of Business and Management of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) has joined a research collaboration with the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) to look closely into the impacts and opportunities of technology on workforce and living quality in Asia-Pacific economies.
Digital automation is transforming the world with unprecedented scope and speed, and its impact is compelling, including the demand for new roles and skills in many sectors. This joint HKUST-APRU Project connects ten scholars from leading universities across the APRU network to examine the changes presented by rapid digitalization in our society.

“UNIfy: BYO” – Joint Campaign by Eight Universities to Reduce Disposable Waste
With the success of the “UNIfy: Skip the Straw” campaign last year, eight UGC-funded universities will launch a “UNIfy:BYO” campaign on March 11, 2019 to reduce disposable waste.
The Campaign signifies the joint efforts of City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingnan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Education University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and The University of Hong Kong to reduce disposable waste.
This year, the BYO campaign is focused on the concept of “bring your own” where students and staff at all universities are encouraged to bring their own reusable items, whether it’s a bag, bottle or container, when purchasing food and other items on campus. The campaign hopes to reduce the use of disposable items and create a culture of using reusables across Hong Kong campuses.

HKUST Researchers Discover More Than 7,000 New Microbial Species Enhancing Our Understanding of Ocean Biodiversity
A group of marine scientists at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) recently discovered over 7,000 new microbial species in the Oceans, including Acidobacteria – a natural medicinal phylum with the CRISPR gene editing system discovered at sea for the first time, shedding new light on human’s understanding of microbial biodiversity in the oceans and bringing hope to the development of new drugs.

HKUST and HKSI Join Forces to Enhance Dual Career Pathways for Elite Athletes
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today to facilitate dual career pathways in sports and academics for elite athletes in Hong Kong.
Under this MoU, HKSI can nominate full-time elite athletes for admission to undergraduate programs of HKUST. The University will offer flexible academic accommodations, including study load balancing, re-scheduling in examinations and adjustment in class attendance requirement, on a case-by-case basis. An advisory committee comprising faculty members and sports specialists will be formed to oversee the athletes’ learning progress and address their individual needs. To accommodate their intensive trainings and competition schedules, HKUST may extend their study to a maximum of twice the normative program duration.

Opening of Tsang Shiu Tim Sports Center Promotes Holistic Education
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) celebrated the opening of a brand new Tsang Shiu Tim Sports Center (“Center”), named after Tsang Shiu Tim Charitable Foundation (Foundation) for a HK$30 million donation that aims to promote holistic education at HKUST.
Mr. TSANG Kai-Ching, representative of the Tsang Shiu Tim Charitable Foundation, said in the Center’s opening ceremony that he hoped HKUST could build an even stronger sports culture to unleash innovation spirit, “A decade ago, the Tsang Shiu Tim family supported HKUST and named its arts hall. I am proud to see that now we are able to contribute to both aesthetic and athletic life of the community at HKUST. The modern age demands students with a healthy mind in a healthy body. I hope we could help nurture sportsmanship in HKUST, and make it a complete university of excellence.”

HKUST Insurance Day Opens Up New Career Opportunities for Students
The School of Business and Management of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) has launched its first Insurance Day.
Officiated by Mr. Joseph CHAN Ho-Lim, the Under Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Dr. Moses CHENG, Chairman of the Insurance Authority, and Mr. Andrew LIAO Cheung-Sing, HKUST Council Chairman, the event features a job fair and panel discussions attended by some of the world’s leading insurers and industry leaders.
