HKUST Robotics continues its dominance
HKUST Robotics Team beat nine competing teams from six local tertiary institutions in the Robocon 2015 Hong Kong Contest. HKUST has been awarded championship in this competition for five consecutive years since 2011.
The contest theme for this year is “ROBOMINTON – BADMINTON ROBO-GAME”, which requires students to design and construct their own robots. The robots were then made to participate in badminton games designed for them.
Computer Science student and team leader Au Chun-ming said: “I wish there was an easier way to winning but the truth is there was none. The two HKUST teams with a total of 29 members spent three hours a day to practise and improve the smoothness and accuracy of the robots’ movements.”

HKUST Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Enters its 10th Anniversary
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), a signature program at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has entered its 10th anniversary. The program has not just helped foster a research culture within the undergraduate community over the years, but has also helped students to develop insightful perspectives on their areas of interest, which is beneficial for their pursuit of careers.
Pioneered by HKUST, UROP was launched in 2005 to give undergraduate students an early taste of research with the guidance of faculty members. Started with a humble size of some 70 participating students, the program has grown in both scale and impact with 370 students joining in 2013-14. The number of participating faculty members has also jumped nearly four times to 148 over the past decade.

HKUST holds the 5th One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition to Foster Entrepreneurial Spirit
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its fifth annual HKUST One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition to foster entrepreneurship and identify the best business plans. The Competition offers a platform for the HKUST community to bring their innovative ideas from concepts to consumers. Winners can use the cash prize as seed money to form their companies or to commercialize their inventions.
More than 100 teams competed for the awards this year with each team consisted of at least one member of students, faculty, staff and alumni from HKUST. An international judging panel made up of investors and leading executives shortlisted 16 finalists for the last round of competition.
Parle, a team formed by four HKUST students, won the President’s Prize with a cash award of HK$300,000, while the second place and third place were claimed by team “NanoPrint” and “NovaMatrix” respectively.

HKUST Confers Honorary Fellowships on Four Distinguished Leaders
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its annual ceremony for the award of Honorary Fellowships today. Officiating at the ceremony were the Honourable Andrew Liao Cheung-sing, Chairman of HKUST Council, and Prof Tony F Chan, President of HKUST. Four distinguished leaders, Mr Nicholas Brooke, Mr Ronald Kee-Young Chao, Dr Steven J DeKrey and Prof Charles G Sodini, were conferred Honorary Fellowships today.

HKUST Partners with Global School Alliance to Host First Corporate Benchmarking Conference in Asia
The School of Business and Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (the HKUST Business School) joined hands with the world’s top alliance of university business schools CEMS1 to hold its first corporate benchmarking conference in Asia. The conference is a highly-regarded forum for top international companies to discuss recruitment and staffing procedures in a neutral environment.The two-day conference held in Hong Kong on 15 and 16 June 2015 provided participating companies, including ABB, Aon Hewitt, EF Education First, Hilti, LinkedIn, Maersk Line, The Ritz-Carlton, United Overseas Bank, among others, with the opportunity to compare and evaluate methods for attracting and retaining high potential graduates as they enter the workforce.

HKUST Community Organizes Summer Garage Sale for Charity and to Promote Sustainability
As a staunch supporter of sustainable living, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) community organizes numerous green activities. A summer garage sale with around 190 stalls of new and secondhand goods was held last Saturday and there will be another sale this Saturday (6 June), supporting the 5Rs (Recycle-Reuse-Reduce-Replace-Rethink) campaign and sustainability.

HKUST Co-hosts The 2nd My Toy Design Competition with Toy Industry Leaders to Foster Local Creative Culture
The 2nd My Toy Design Competition co-hosted by the Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management (IELM) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, the Hong Kong Toys Council and the Toys Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong Limited was concluded today. HKUST co-hosted the competition with toy industry leaders with the aims of fostering local creative culture, bringing innovative ideas to the industry, cultivating the creativity of students and designers, as well as giving them a chance to understand more about the toy industry.

HKUST Presents Common Core Course Excellence Award
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held the Third Common Core Course Excellence Award Presentation Ceremony today in recognition of the outstanding Common Core courses. The event highlights the University’s endeavor and commitment to foster a holistic education for undergraduate students.
This year’s Excellence Award went to “Identity Goes Global: From Border Crossing to Boundary Remaking” taught by Assistant Prof May Yi Shaw and Mr Bo Xu from the Division of Humanities. The course enables students to study and understand “global identity” across different disciplines such as race, ethnicity, nationality, language, culture or gender with a comprehensive and creative approach. Students are encouraged to think critically about their own identity and the factors that have shaped and continue to influence the core of their own identity.
