HKUST's International, Research-rich, Creative and Broad-based Teaching Commended by Quality Assurance Council
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) welcomes the report from the Quality Assurance Council (QAC), which concluded that “in its short history, HKUST has advanced to become a leading international university”, with “strong grounds for being proud of its achievements to date”. The QAC Audit Panel also recognizes the University’s commitment to a “culture of academic excellence”, demonstrated by its “strong global rankings”, and commended that HKUST has a “rigorous and scholarly approach to quality improvement”.

Schneider Electric Chairman and CEO Mr Jean-Pascal Tricoire Shares Insights on The New Energy World at HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series yesterday, featuring Mr Jean-Pascal Tricoire, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Schneider Electric. The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST. Speaking on "The New Energy World", Mr Tricoire presented an overview on how the energy world is changing from a concentrated and scaled system to a decentralized system with diverse energy generation sources. He also shared his insights on how the convergence of information technology in the energy sector and the emergence of alternative energy generation sources at scalable levels are providing new opportunities for producing, distributing and consuming energy.

“Natural World, Cultural Elegance” Science Meets Photography in HKUST exhibition
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Library holds an exhibition to display the artworks of a world-renowned photographer Dr Tin Man Lee, who was awarded the Grand Prize in the highly prestigious Nature's Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Competition in 2013, out of 25,000 entries from 50 countries. Titled “Natural World, Cultural Elegance: A Photography Exhibition by Tin Man Lee”, this exhibition features 48 stunning wildlife photos along with multimedia displays, including Nature's winning piece “Pouncing Bear”, which was exhibited in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C., USA. “I am very excited and honored to have my first solo exhibition at HKUST. I love animals and photography, and I hope my photos can raise the awareness of the beauty of nature around us,” said Dr Tin Man Lee.

Former US Secretary of Energy Prof Steven Chu Shares Insights on Climate Change and Renewable Energy at HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the first talk of its 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series yesterday, featuring Prof Steven Chu, Nobel Laureate in Physics in 1997 and former US Secretary of Energy.  The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST.

HKUST Signed Framework Agreement with Digital China to Build Smart City Research Institute
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and China's largest integrated IT service provider Digital China Holdings Limited (Digital China) signed a framework agreement to build the Smart City (Hong Kong) Research Institute with an aim to foster the development of smart city in Hong Kong and Mainland China. According to the agreement, HKUST and Digital China will work together on the strategic planning of the smart city and the development of key information technologies of big data for the smart city. The two parties will collectively build an experience center of the smart city and apply for various government sponsored research programs and important academic projects. HKUST will mobilize its research talents and facilities for the cooperation and leverage its advantages in science and technology research, while Digital China will leverage its advantages in IT planning and consulting, as well as development of solutions.

HKUST professor won the UGC teaching award 2015
Prof Kam-Tim Woo, Associate Professor of Engineering Education of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), received the 2015 University Grants Committee (UGC) Teaching Award today in recognition of his outstanding teaching performance and achievements. HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan congratulated Prof Woo on winning the award, ‘HKUST strives to achieve education and research excellence and we have many innovative and dedicated faculty members.  It is very encouraging that our faculty member has been honored with the Award.  It is an evidence of the University’s commitment in enhancing teaching and learning I am glad that Prof Woo has won the Award.’

Former US Secretary of Energy Prof Steven Chu to Speak at Inaugural HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is set to launch a Distinguished Speakers Series to mark its 25th anniversary. With a mission to advance learning and knowledge, the University has invited leaders and experts from around the globe to share their insights with our faculty, students, staff and local audience. The series’ inaugural speaker Prof Steven Chu, Nobel Laureate in Physics in 1997 and former US Secretary of Energy, will deliver a speech entitled “Energy, Climate Change and the Transition to a Sustainable World” on September 15, 2015. Another five Nobel Laureates have also accepted invitations to speak in this series, other distinguished speakers include policy shapers, corporate leaders and entrepreneurs who have made changes in their own innovative ways.
