The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has climbed to No.18 in the high-profile Global Employability University Ranking 2013. HKUST is the only university in Greater China in the top 20. The survey and rankings are conducted by Emerging, a French human resources consultancy, and Trendence, a leading European research institute. The ranking was derived from the responses of 5,000 recruiters in a total of 30 countries and regions, including France, Germany, Italy, the US, the UK, Japan, Singapore, Mainland China and Hong Kong: Those responding comprised 2,700 online, and some 2,300 CEOs and chairmen from the leading 1,000 companies, who cast votes for the top 150 universities producing the most employable graduates.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its first specifically named HKUST IdeasLab session at the Annual Meeting of the New Champions of the World Economic Forum, convened in September in Dalian, China. Premier Li Keqiang officiated at the Forum, also known as the "Summer Davos", which brought together more than 2,000 political and community leaders, academics, experts and global entrepreneurs from over 90 countries and regions to discuss key global challenges and share related strategies on the theme of "Meeting the Innovation Imperative". The HKUST Ideas Lab featured an expert team from the University, led by the HKUST President, in a discussion on brain research and aging issues with other global specialists.

Dr Chi-ho Yeung and Prof Michael Wong from the Department of Physics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in collaboration with Prof David Saad from Aston University in the UK have applied polymer physics to derive a novel approach for coordinating optimal routes for individual passengers. Their simulations using data from the London underground network show that the new method reduces crowding experienced by passengers by 24%, while journeys take only 5% longer on average. The findings have been published in the   Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) of the USA.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has received a US$500,000 donation from the Tongyi Industrial Group to boost the development of the Center for Electronic Commerce at the University's School of Business and Management. In appreciation of Tongyi Industrial Group's generosity, the University has named the Center after the Group.

For the fifth straight year, the Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA (EMBA) program has been ranked the top performing EMBA program in the world by the Financial Times. It also marks the program’s 15th anniversary and its sixth No. 1 ranking in the global survey. In the newly released Financial Times EMBA Ranking 2013, the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA program also placed No. 3 in terms of “Aims Achieved”, which measures the extent to which the alumni fulfilled their goals after taking the program. The program placed 3rd in the work experience of students and 5th in terms of their diversity. The program is jointly offered by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

A research team led by Prof Kei May Lau, Chair Professor in the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has developed a novel "match-making" technology to deposit next-generation high-speed energy-efficient transistors on silicon using high-mobility compound semiconductor materials. These devices seek to reduce power consumption by as much as 10 times and increase switching speed five folds. The team has received the JSAP Outstanding Paper Award by The Japan Society of Applied Physics, the only research team in Hong Kong and Mainland China to receive this award in its history since 1979.

Student halls VIII and IX include green rooftops to reduce heat, solar panels, and eco-friendly furnishings and fittings. Sustainability on campus has received a boost with both of the University’s most recent undergraduate student hostels achieving Building Environmental Assessment Method (BEAM) Eco Building Gold Awards. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Infiniti Motor Company Limited entered into a cooperation agreement yesterday, centering on the new Infiniti Performance Engineering Academy. HKUST is the sole university in Hong Kong to join this global talent search initiative, which offers top engineering students the opportunity to gain experience with Infiniti Red Bull Racing, a triple Formula One World Championship-winning team, and at Infiniti's European Technical Center in the UK. Infiniti Red Bull Racing Formula One team ambassador Mr David Coulthard, Infiniti Formula One Global Director Mr Andreas Sigl, HKUST Vice-President for Institutional Advancement Dr Eden Y Woon, and Dean of Engineering Prof Khaled Ben Letaief officiated at the agreement signing ceremony. HKUST engineering students also engaged in discussions with the Formula One team at the event.
