Three Mathematics Giants Gather at HKUST to Discuss the Essence of Mathematics
This year’s Shaw Laureate in Mathematical Sciences, Prof Jean Bourgain – Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, gave a lecture at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today to a capacity audience in the 400-seat lecture theater. HKUST President Tony F Chan and UC RUSAL Chief Executive Officer Oleg Deripaska Discuss the Power of Focus
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has hosted the first UC RUSAL President’s Forum at which Mr Oleg Deripaska, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of UC RUSAL, the world’s largest aluminum producer, unveiled the secrets of his personal growth, citing the power of focus as the main contributor of his success to becoming the leader of a global enterprise with a 76,000 workforce spanning 19 countries. The President’s Forum, entitled “The Power of Focus: Turning Opportunity into Success” and chaired by HKUST President Tony F Chan, was held on HKUST campus and broadcast globally. “Behind every project is an idea. At first this idea might seem unfeasible and you will be discouraged by those around you. But regardless of these hurdles, it is the ability to focus that will turn that idea into an opportunity, and that opportunity into success,” Mr Deripaska said.

HKUST Develops World's First Smart Anti-microbial Coating to Control Infectious Diseases
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today announced the successful development of a smart anti-microbial coating that has the longest-lasting effect against the widest range of microbes."This revolutionary coating will set a new standard in the maintenance of public health, as it is easy to apply, safe to use, fast and effective in killing a wide spectrum of microbes, long-lasting, and environmentally friendly," said Prof King-Lun Yeung of HKUST's Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

HKUST Officially Welcomes New Students
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) officially welcomes all new students to the University today. HKUST President Tony F Chan says at the University Welcome ceremony that HKUST aims to provide every student with a holistic education, and that apart from acquiring knowledge, students should also take part in various extracurricular activities, as well as establish fruitful relationships with professors and other students. President Chan said that this year, the ratio of non-local undergraduate students at HKUST has risen to 16%, of which half is from the Mainland and half is from overseas.
