The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) President Designate Prof Tony Chan was today (28 August 2009) appointed Honorary Professor by Xian Jiaotong University.  After the appointment ceremony, Prof Chan gave a talk entitled “Image Processing – a New Frontier for Applied Mathematics”. Prof Chan will become President of HKUST on Tuesday, 1 September 2009, succeeding out-going President Paul Chu who has headed HKUST for the past 8 years. Prior to assuming HKUST presidency, Prof Chan was Assistant Director of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in charge of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate, the largest directorate at NSF, guiding and managing research funding of about HK$10 billion a year in astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematical science, material science and multidisciplinary activities. Prof Chan had also been Dean of Physical Sciences at University of California at Los Angeles.

香 港 科 技 大 學 （ 科 大 ） 與 國 家 語 言 文 字 工 作 委 員 會 （ 國 家 語 委 ） 普 通 話 培 訓 測 試 中 心 今 日 （ 星 期 四 ） 簽 訂 了 第 二 次 合 作 協 議 ， 為 期 三 年 。 在 這 次 協 議 下 ， 科 大 的 普 通 話 培 訓 和 測 試 除 服 務 校 內 人 士 外 ， 更 歡 迎 香 港 社 會 各 界 人 士 申 請 參 加 。 新 合 作 協 議 由 科 大 朱 經 武 校 長 與 教 育 部 語 言 文 字 應 用 研 究 所 所 長 、 國 家 語 委 普 通 話 培 訓 測 試 中 心 姚 喜 雙 主 任 共 同 簽 署 。 這 是 朱 經 武 校 長 離 任 前 代 表 科 大 簽 署 的 最 後 一 份 協 議 。 朱 經 武 校 長 離 任 在 即 ， 但 在 他 大 力 支 持 下 ， 科 大 所 開 展 的 普 通 話 培 訓 測 試 在 未 來 將 積 極 延 續 下 去 。 普 通 話 水 平 測 試 是 中 國 一 項 國 家 級 的 語 文 測 試 ， 極 具 權 威 性 和 認 受 性 。 科 大 自 2006 年 8 月 成 立 普 通 話 水 平 培 訓 測 試 中 心 以 來 ， 為 近 1,500 名 科 大 學 生 和 教 職 員 開 辦 了 11 期 不 同 類 型 、 不 同 層 次 的 普 通 話 培 訓 課 程 ， 並 舉 行 了 6 期 普 通 話 水 平 測 試 ， 共 測 評 了 近 800 名 考 生 的 普 通 話 水 平 。 科 大 的 培 訓 課 程 目 標 清 晰 ， 系 列 性 強 ， 在 嚴 格 依 據 普 通 話 水 平 測 試 要 求 的 前 提 下 ， 特 別 針 對 香 港 人 學 習 普 通 話 的 難 點 ， 因 此 得 到 學 員 一 致 好 評 ， 而 考 生 的 「 入 等 級 率 」 達 到 百 分 之 九 十 四 。

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced today (Thursday, 20 August 2009) the appointment of Prof Khaled Ben Letaief as Dean of Engineering with effect from 1 September 2009. Prof Ben Letaief, Chair Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering, has been selected for this key position following a competitive worldwide search. He will succeed Prof Philip Chan, who has assumed the deanship for the past 6 years – the longest-serving dean in the history of HKUST.

Prof Khaled BEN LETAIEF, Chair Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been elected Vice-President of the Communications Society of the IEEE – the worldwide professional association for electronic and electrical engineers with 455,000 members from over 160 countries. The Communications Society is the second largest society within IEEE, with about 45,000 members (after the Computer Society with 59,000 members). Vice-Presidents of the IEEE Communications Society are elected once every two years.

Prof Mingjie ZHANG, Chair Professor of Biochemistry at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and his team of researchers, including Dr Cong YU, Dr Wei FENG and Dr Zhiyi WEI, have made breakthrough discovery on how motor proteins like myosin VI behave. As the myosin VI protein is essential to the well being of cells in general and its mutation is known to cause hereditary blindness and deafness as well as cancer, this discovery is expected to have far reaching and fundamental impact on medical science. This ground-breaking study by Prof Zhang and his team was published in the 7 August 2009 issue of Cell, one of the most prestigious journals in life science.

Five Form 6 students trained by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have scored the best results ever for Hong Kong at the 40th International Physics Olympiad in Mexico from 12 to 19 July 2009, netting one gold, two silver and three bronze medals. These students are participants in the “Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme” of the Education Bureau, and have won awards at last year’s Hong Kong Physics Olympiad. On completion of a one-year training program provided by HKUST’s Physics Department and having gone through a series of challenges, they were selected to take part in this international competition. This year’s International Physics Olympiad attracted over 70 competing teams from different countries and regions, with each team comprising five members.

The School of Humanities and Social Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will enhance its scope of international collaboration by forming functional ties with University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), University of Virginia, and six top universities in Beijing. The School will also revamp its undergraduate curriculum and include new subjects such as music appreciation, and a major program in Global China Studies. Teaching and research in Energy and Environment will be introduced, and the Advisory Committee will be expanded. This was outlined by Prof James Z Lee, new Dean of Humanities and Social Science.

香 港 科 技 大 學 （ 科 大 ） 本 年 度 內 地 本 科 生 招 生 計 劃 已 經 圓 滿 結 束 。 今 年 共 有 3,215 人 報 考 ， 其 中 1,019 人 獲 邀 參 加 入 學 面 試 ， 最 後 共 有 149 人 確 認 接 受 錄 取 。 繼 2007 年 報 考 科 大 人 數 出 現 高 峰 後 ， 去 年 與 今 年 報 考 科 大 的 人 數 有 所 減 少 。 科 大 國 際 與 中 國 內 地 學 生 及 學 術 事 務 主 任 朱 力 徑 博 士 表 示 ： 數 名 人 數 下 降 的 因 素 很 多 ， 主 要 原 因 是 內 地 學 生 和 家 長 都 逐 漸 認 識 到 ： 科 大 選 拔 嚴 格 ， 被 錄 取 已 經 不 易 ， 獲 頒 入 學 奬 學 金 更 加 困 難 。 由 2007 年 始 ， 特 別 是 去 年 ， 獲 科 大 錄 取 的 同 學 當 中 ， 不 少 人 的 高 考 成 績 ， 足 以 入 讀 內 地 頂 尖 大 學 ， 雖 未 獲 頒 發 入 學 奬 學 金 ， 仍 選 擇 入 讀 科 大 。 此 外 ， 內 地 學 生 亦 明 白 ， 科 大 工 商 管 理 學 院 的 教 學 質 量 優 異 ， 畢 業 出 路 優 勝 ， 而 理 學 院 及 工 學 院 的 教 學 質 量 亦 高 ， 國 際 聯 繫 緊 密 ， 有 利 於 他 們 將 來 到 世 界 頂 級 學 府 繼 續 深 造 。 因 此 ， 今 年 申 請 入 讀 科 大 理 學 院 與 工 學 院 的 人 數 比 例 ， 有 所 上 升 。 數 據 顯 示 ， 今 年 申 請 報 讀 科 大 的 內 地 學 生 質 素 進 一 步 提 升 。 科 大 今 年 在 25 省 市 的 面 試 分 數 線 ， 與 去 年 的 標 準 相 若 ， 達 到 面 試 分 數 線 的 申 請 人 比 率 為 32% ， 比 去 年 的 25% 上 升 7% 。 數 據 亦 顯 示 ， 近 年 申 請 入 讀 科 大 的 學 生 ， 更 踴 躍 參 加 科 大 的 面 試 ， 亦 更 願 意 接 受 科 大 的 錄 取 。 詳 情 請 參 考 附 表 。
