Hong Kong's First Tertiary Institutions Cantonese Opera Promotion Project Kicks Off at HKUST
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (Friday, 10 October 2008) officially launched Hong Kong's first Tertiary Institutions Cantonese Opera Promotion Project.
This one-year project aims to enhance the knowledge and appreciation of Cantonese Opera among students and staff of tertiary institutions, and is also another of HKUST's services to the community by giving volunteer performances and providing a free performance venue at HKUST for amateur groups.
The opening ceremony at the Atrium of HKUST was officiated by the Chairman of the Cantonese Opera Development Fund Executive Committee and Advisory Committee Dr Stephen Chow; Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Wo Organization Ms Lisa Wang; renowned Cantonese Opera artiste Mr Law Ka-ying; and HKUST Vice-President for Academic Affairs Prof Roland Chin.

HKUST School of Engineering to Introduce New Student Enrolment Scheme Incorporating School-based Admission
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced today the launch of the most flexible engineering student admission scheme among Hong Kong's tertiary institutions. The new scheme, incorporating the current "program-based" arrangements and the new "school-based" option, gives students the best of both worlds.
The new School-based Admission (SBA) scheme will be available to both Joint University Programmes Admission Scheme (JUPAS) and Early Admission Scheme (EAS) applicants starting from the 2009 to 2010 academic year. In addition to the existing individual 13 programs offered by HKUST School of Engineering, students are given the opportunity to explore their interest further before they select a program under the SBA, adding up a total of 15 programs for students to choose from.

HKUST Launches Hong Kong's First Tertiary Institutions Cantonese Opera Promotion Project (Chinese Only)
香 港 科 技 大 學 ( 科 大 ) 獲 得 民 政 事 務 局 局 長 法 團 轄 下 的 粵 劇 發 展 基 金 資 助 20 萬 元 , 推 出 為 期 一 年 的 粵 劇 推 廣 計 劃 , 提 高 全 港 大 專 學 生 及 教 職 員 對 粵 劇 的 認 識 和 欣 賞 , 並 為 社 區 人 士 提 供 粵 劇 節 目 及 場 地 。
這 是 本 港 首 個 惠 及 全 港 大 專 院 校 的 粵 劇 推 廣 計 劃 。
「 這 計 劃 既 可 以 弘 揚 國 粹 , 又 可 以 服 務 社 群 。 」 科 大 學 生 事 務 處 處 長 區 嘉 麗 博 士 說 。
「 科 大 一 向 著 重 全 人 發 展 , 除 了 提 供 高 水 平 的 科 技 和 商 學 教 育 及 研 究 外 , 也 很 著 重 培 養 文 化 欣 賞 和 創 作 。 我 們 非 常 感 謝 政 府 大 力 支 持 。 」 她 說 。
「 大 專 粵 劇 推 廣 計 劃 」 主 要 包 括 四 類 活 動 : 工 作 坊 、 示 範 講 座 、 粵 劇 演 出 及 攝 影 比 賽 。
工 作 坊 會 教 授 基 本 做 手 身 段 及 排 演 折 子 戲 , 劇 目 包 括 「 鳳 閣 恩 仇 未 了 情 」 、 「 帝 女 花 之 香 夭 」 及 「 紫 釵 記 之 拾 釵 」。 課 程 完 成 後 , 更 會 舉 辦 結 業 演 出 。 二 零 零 八 年 九 月 二 十 六 日 截 止 報 名 。
示 範 講 座 將 會 舉 辦 兩 次 , 題 目 分 別 為 「 粵 劇 做 手 身 段 示 範 」 以 及 「 粵 劇 武 場 及 鑼 鼓 示 範 」。
演 出 方 面 , 科 大 會 提 供 藝 術 表 演 場 地 給 予 校 外 業 餘 粵 劇 團 體 作 公 開 演 出 , 也 會 安 排 學 員 義 務 到 醫 院 及 老 人 院 等 表 演 折 子 戲 。

Hong Kong Youngsters Outperform Their Global Peers at Maths and Problem Solving
World Class Tests in Mathematics and Problem Solving administered by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in April this year have found Hong Kong youngsters aged between 8 and 14 outperform their peers in other parts of the world by a wide margin, with distinction rates ranging between 27% and 38% compared with the global average distinction rate of 10%.
World Class Tests are launched in 2001 by the British Government’s Department for Education and Skills for assessing and nurturing gifted youngsters. It is an international benchmark for Mathematics and Problem Solving. The questions in the tests are designed by professors of renowned universities in the UK, USA and Australia.
The Tests were first introduced in Hong Kong in 2004, and since then, over 20,000 students from nearly 400 schools have taken the tests. In 2008, HKUST was commissioned to promote and administer the tests in the Asian region.

HKUST Campus Inspired by Ancient Chinese Astronomical Wisdom
A replica of the Armillary Sphere – an ancient Chinese invention and one of the oldest astronomical instruments in the world for measuring the position of heavenly bodies – has been installed at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), adding aesthetic and educational value to university life
At the dedication ceremony of this Armillary Sphere Replica today (3 September 2008), HKUST President Paul Chu said, “HKUST is a relatively young university, and we need to be constantly inspired by the wisdom of the ancient Chinese scientists. This replica of the Armillary Sphere is a glamorous work of art in its own right and brings an added dimension to the beauty of our campus.”

Wing Lung Bank Foundation Donates HK$1 Million To HKUST To Set Up Scholarships
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (Thursday) received a HK$1 million donation from Wing Lung Bank Foundation. The donation will be used to establish scholarships for outstanding continuing students.
Speaking at the cheque presentation ceremony, HKUST Vice-President for Academic Affairs Prof Roland Chin expressed his wholehearted gratitude for Wing Lung Bank Foundation’s generous donation. “To support our future campus expansion and to meet the educational and research goals set in the University’s Strategic Plan, HKUST relies on the generous support from all sectors of the community. We will ensure that this wonderful gift from Wing Lung Bank Foundation will be appropriately used for nurturing our future leaders,” Prof Chin said.
