28 Aug 2001 | UG Yr1 | Under the media spotlight with Prof. Chu Awesome! I talked to my University Principal and I am on the NEWSPAPER! It all happened by coincidence. Yesterday, I had just finished my Ocamp and was on the way home. When I was passing by the Atrium, I noticed a large crowd of reporters. I decided to get closer to the crowd simply out of curiosity and noticed a group of reporters interviewing our principal Prof. Chu. Since that was the first time I had ever met Prof. Chu so I tried to squeeze into the crowd so I could hear what he was saying. The miraculous moment came! Suddenly, someone tapped my shoulder and I was kind of pushed to the front of the crowd. A person encouraged me to talk to Prof. Chu. I felt the eyes of the entire crowd on me. I was so embarrassed that I abruptly uttered something that I don't even remember to this day. I suppose Prof. Chu must have noticed my nervousness because he beamed at me and gave me a friendly greeting.

"There was this cute girl named...," as made fun by friends is generally the beginning line of all my stories, but let us be serious here for a second. To describe a semester at HKUST, I will have to use the four letter word that our moms do not let us say a lot, but I am not going to do that. I will, however, say that every moment of it is worth leaving the comfort of home, because for every memory that is made, good or bad, sweet or bitter, there also is a story worth sharing. And there was actually this cute girl in my COMP class who was a total five letter word our dads do not let us call a girl with.

Have you ever wondered how the student organizations of the HKUST were started? Look at the smiles on the faces of these people. And as you scan towards the lower right corner, you will find out the print "91 12 14". Back then, the HKUST Students' Union Organising Committee (S.U.O.C.) was already in operation. Judging from their smiles, you will also find out back then, although we might not know how exactly to build a Students' Union from scratch, one thing that we were sure of, no matter what, with committed hearts, open minds, undaunted feet, and smiling faces, we'll get there. Who are the S.U.O.C.? S-miling faces U-ndaunted feet O-pen minds C-ommitted hearts. The HKUST Students' Union Organising Committee. Sands did build castle.

My name is Joel and I am graduated from HKUST BSc(Chem) 2002, I have started the greenskeeper career at 2002 in a golf course, and now the Grounds Manager of the Hong Kong Cricket Club. This is a very special job that I have never thought before I graduated. And this is a job very not common in Hong Kong. After few years of training, I am now the Grounds Manager of the Hong Kong Cricket Club. Looking after a cricket field and the lawn bowling green. In the time of the my training, I have been to different places for train. The countries Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and England. Those are very favourite places in the world of the game of the cricket. And also building a very strong knowledge in this career.

At the Crack of Dawn

Here, I want to share with you a true story of my life “with” HKUST. I visited HKUST at the open day in 1997. I still remember Prof. King Chow claimed that it was the beginning of a grand era in biological science. I still remember the campus tour led by the senior students. Amazingly, I still walk the same path even to this day. I knock on the door of a professor to express to him how much I loved HKUST and Biology. He promised to let me in and asked me to come on registration day. Unfortunately, my result in HKAL examination was poor. I woefully explained to the professor about the subpar quality of my result. I felt shameful and felt myself not worthy for studying at HKUST. This ultimately resulted in me making a very bad decision in my life. I did not show up at HKUST that day.

Let's think for a second, how does a university life qualify for the best experience? What if it enlightened you for a whole new world for your intellectual pursuit? How about meeting someone who you called a life partner? And last but not the least a rewarding and meaningful career? The best of the best though, is when one gets the 3 wishes together! It all began in August 1998, the kickoff of a life-changing journey for a regular 19-year old in Hong Kong. I used to love Chinese history but it was the Humanities professors at UST who taught me how to study our own history from a totally different perspective. I also got to join AIESEC, the world's largest student run organization, in which I feel so lucky to meet my beloved wife and offered me the chance to go through a traineeship with my current employer in the US. Plus, all the advertising, consumer behavior and market research knowledge I accumulated that I call my professional expertise now.

They had spent their effort more than half of year and gonna show their effort to audience on that night . Everyone were enjoying this moment and AP11 become their unforgetable memories in U-life.
