科大成立创业中心推动科技商品化(只供英文版本)
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has introduced an Entrepreneurship Program to members of the University as an initiative to enhance science and technology development in the territory. Since the initiation of the program last year, nine companies have been set up. They are housed in the Entrepreneurship Center, located on the third floor of the Annex.Mr Henry Tang, Chairman of Federation of Hong Kong Industries, Prof Chia-Wei Woo, HKUST President and Prof Otto Lin, HKUST's Vice-President for Research and Development will officiate at the opening ceremony for the Center to be held on 24 February, 2000.

科大与教院合办全港首个资讯科技教育学位课程
香港教育学院校长许美德教授与香港科技大学校长吴家玮教授于今天(1月17日)签署学术合作协议,开展多项交流合作计划,其中包括于今年九月开办一个全新的四年全日制荣誉理学士(数学及资讯科技教育)学位课程。香港教育学院校长许美德教授于签署仪式上表示,是次合作见证了两校协力培育资讯科技老师的决心及香港大专界团结的趋向。许校长相信,这课程结合了两所院校各自在科研及教师培训上的优势,必能配合特区政府的资讯科技教育政策,培育资讯科技及数学教师,以及能把资讯科技应用于教学的老师。香港科技大学校长吴家玮教授认为,香港的未来有赖于培养人才来推动知识经济,而资讯科技是带领社会走向知识经济的主要动力之一。吴校长说:「中小学的基础教育是培育人才的关键。政府和社会赋与科大的使命是为本港的科技和教育作出贡献;因此,我们很高兴能与教院合作,共同培育出色的教师,教育新一代的社会栋梁。」教院主要负责课程裏为期约一年的教师专业培训部分,此外,学生亦需到中学实习教学。科大则负责本科学术部分,学生因而将于教院、科大两校上课。除新学位课程外,两校将按协议发展一些其他方面的学术交流活动,包括:交换学生,合办学术会议和研讨会,以及在学术或行政上相互支援、开办别的教师培训课程等。

Young HKUST Biochemist Awarded Research Funding from National Natural Science Foundation(只供英文版本)
Dr. Fwu-Shan Sheu, Assistant Professor in the Biochemistry Department at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has received RMB 400,000 in funding from the Overseas Young Scholar Collaboration Research Grant 1999 of the National Natural Science Foundation.The Foundation received a total of 807 applications from overseas scientists in the field of biomedical sciences in 1999. Dr. Sheu is the only one in the field of life sciences and also one of the three young Hong Kong scientists in all the fields to be awarded research funds from the Foundation last year.Dr. Sheu's research topic is "The redox effect of nitric oxide on single ion channel activities: a study of molecular mechanism for neural plasticity". Dr. Sheu's research is likely to have positive impact on the development of drugs on enhancing memory in learning.
