Two new recycling programs were launched in the fall semester, Styrofoam and electronic and electrical waste recycling on campus.

香港科技大學（科大）計算機科學及工程學系副教授麥鑑榮指出，最近一項調查顯示香港約有五萬名全聾或聽障人士。然而，這個社群所獲的支持仍然不足。 麥教授解釋：「香港的專業手語翻譯員人數偏低，現時只有約54名。」 為解決上述問題，科大計算機科學及工程學系應屆畢業生黎家偉、梁銘方及翁偉超，決定在畢業專題習作中運用於科大所學的知識，為聽障人士開發一個應用程式，使用者只要把中文句子輸入手機，便可翻譯成手語示範錄像。

Our HKUST Library has been spending great effort in promoting sustainability through their operations.

To utilize the natural resources and reduce the operational cost of the orphanages, a group of HKUST students from Connect service learning program have spent the last two summers there to help build a solar energy system as the country is shiny for most of the time during the year.

國際知名的科研大學香港科技大學致力建立一個環保校園，並旨在於廣泛社區擔任領導角色，以實踐和推動可持續發展概念。 其中值得注意的例子，就是科大在創校之初採用海水製冷技術，為學術大樓中央冷氣系統供冷。其後，科大把這項先驅技術擴展至全新落成、樓高八層的鄭裕彤樓，透過擴充原有的中央供冷站產能，建立區域性製冷系統，從而達致最高效能和減少碳排放。

In HKUST, we have installed more than 150 water fountains around campus that provide clean and safe drinking water.
