The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) School of Engineering and the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) School of Engineering & Applied Science have announced a plan for closer collaboration and coordination in their executive technology management programs.

Representatives of the two schools signed a Statement of Strategic Alliance at HKUST today (27 February), which paves the way for more student and faculty exchanges. Students from each school will have the opportunity to visit the other school and take courses for credit, providing them with a global perspective and access to a wider range of world quality faculty.

“We are very excited about entering into this strategic alliance with HKUST. This partnership brings together the expertise and resources of two top institutions in technology management education. Students will benefit from the academic programs of both universities, and the opportunities to enrich their business networks," said Prof. Lyle Ungar, Associate Professor of Computer and Information Science and Director of Penn’s Executive Master’s in Technology Program (EMTM) program.

Prof. Ungar added: “As the fastest growing economy in the world, China offers enormous opportunities and challenges for US technology managers. Hong Kong will continue to play an important role in China’s economic development, and this strategic alliance with HKUST opens the door for Penn students who have aspirations in China.”

The partnership with Penn, an Ivy League institution ranking among the top 10 US universities, is part of HKUST’s ongoing drive to internationalize the University. Prof. Kang L Wang, Dean of Engineering of HKUST, said: “HKUST and Penn share the common goal of educating technology managers who can turn innovations into commercial success in the global market place. Hong Kong is an international city strategically placed to further promote globalization. As the territory’s only research university specializing in science, technology and management, HKUST will continue to develop alliances with leading international institutions like Penn, in tandem with Hong Kong’s global drive."

Dr. Helen Shen, Associate Professor at HKUST's Computer Science Department and Master of Technology Management (MTM) Program Director, said the strategic alliance would further enhance the already very popular MTM program of HKUST. “In terms of both curriculum and network, the partnership with Penn will add another significant asset to HKUST’s technology management education programs,” said Dr. Shen.

The two programs are the first of their kind in both Hong Kong and the US. Combining studies in emerging technologies with modern management principles, these programs are designed for working technology professionals who are or will be in management positions that require a broad understanding of the business context in which technology is deployed. Both programs emphasize management as well as technical expertise. Penn’s EMTM is co-sponsored by the Wharton School of Management, while the HKUST School of Engineering works in partnership with the School of Business and Management in offering the MTM program.

This week, 35 Penn’s EMTM students are on an active exchange at HKUST, studying topics such as supply chain management, and current trends in the territory and the Chinese Mainland. The program also includes a forum for Penn and HKUST students to exchange ideas on the China market. Last year, students of HKUST’s MTM program visited Penn and attended courses on international business strategy.
