Two scientists from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) were honored with the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship Awards for their research excellence.Dr. Tai-Kai Ng, Associate Professor of Physics and Dr. Randy Y C Poon, Associate Professor of Biochemistry, were among the five scholars who received this year’s Croucher Senior Research Fellowship Awards. They were selected through a highly competitive review process by leading experts in the international scientific community.Mr. Donald Tsang, Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR, presented award certificates to the five winners at a presentation ceremony held by the Croucher Foundation today.

Young HKUST Biochemist Awarded Research Funding from National Natural Science Foundation(只供英文版本)
Dr. Fwu-Shan Sheu, Assistant Professor in the Biochemistry Department at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has received RMB 400,000 in funding from the Overseas Young Scholar Collaboration Research Grant 1999 of the National Natural Science Foundation.The Foundation received a total of 807 applications from overseas scientists in the field of biomedical sciences in 1999. Dr. Sheu is the only one in the field of life sciences and also one of the three young Hong Kong scientists in all the fields to be awarded research funds from the Foundation last year.Dr. Sheu's research topic is "The redox effect of nitric oxide on single ion channel activities: a study of molecular mechanism for neural plasticity". Dr. Sheu's research is likely to have positive impact on the development of drugs on enhancing memory in learning.
