Lam Ho Tat Year 2, major in Physics HKUST is well known for its Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP), which encourages students to gain early research experience with distinguished professors. UROP is not officially open to freshmen. However, in the first week of the first semester in Year 1, I decided to email Prof Kwok Yip Szeto in the Department of Physics to express my interest. Very fortunately, he decided to accept me and I started doing theoretical physics research under his supervision.

香港科技大學(科大)商學院開辦嶄新的公益投資學分選修課程，讓學生積極與社會企業及慈善基金攜手合作，直接參與和投資於真實的社企投資項目，並運用商業知識和技巧，協助社企推動業務的持續發展，接受各學系的本科生及碩士生報讀。 自2013年起試辦的「公益創業及慈善投資」，獲葉氏家族慈善機構撥款支持。課程主要透過由學生主導的「慈善投資基金」，以50萬港元為資本，讓他們同時擔當真實創業社企顧問及投資者，發掘及針對切身的社會和環境問題，為社企業務制訂可持續的投資方案，為社會帶來禆益。同時，同學要參與基金投資的決策，與獨立專業評審和教職員代表，共同選出受助的社企合作夥伴。 科大商學院兼任副教授及該課程導師周尚頤教授表示：「課程為學生提供難得機會，與從事公益創業及慈善投資的專業人士直接交流接觸，了解行業的特色及最新發展。慈善基金提供的投資款項讓學生與社企合力解決現實的社會及環境問題，協助缺乏經費的社企成長和持續發展。」 葉氏家族慈善機構主席馮葉儀皓女士表示：「葉氏家族慈善機構撥款委員會認為，要發展社會慈善事業，需建構有效的平台，以開拓公益創業空間，鼓勵跨界別協作和積極參與。我們對有教育機構樂意以開放的態度、靈活的方式及創新的思維，與基金共同實踐抱負，感到十分高興。」 課程結合課堂講學、業界專家分享，以及與社企合作制訂投資方案三大元素。在完成為期約三個月有關公益創業及社會價值投資的課堂，學生分成不同組別，並與一間經甄選的社企，合作制訂業務發展和融資方案，以比賽形式角逐基金投資款項。完成比賽後，學生可參與受助社企制訂實踐計劃，或選擇繼續與原先社企合作，研究其他融資方案。 今年，夥拍回收(香港)有限公司(HK Recycles)的科大本科及碩士課程學生隊伍在比賽中獲勝，成功為該剛起步的環保社企爭取了25萬港元投資，擴充其回收物流業務。資金將用作市場推廣、購置設備，以及聘用更多弱勢社群人士協助回收廢物，推動循環再用。按學生隊伍進行的財務及社會價值回報分析報告估算，到2015年有關投資將可鼓勵共7,500名新用戶使用HK Recycles的回收服務，有助紓緩近期備受爭議的垃圾堆填壓力。

香 港 科 技 大 學 （ 科 大 ） 將 於 全 球 兩 大 網 上 學 習 平 台 之 一 的 edX (xConsortium) 推 出 三 項 新 課 程 ， 致 力 推 動 「 大 規 模 開 放 在 線 課 程 MOOCs 」 教 學 模 式 。 MOOC 讓 學 生 按 個 別 進 度 和 興 趣 修 讀 世 界 級 大 學 提 供 的 優 質 課 程 ， 無 分 國 界 ， 因 材 施 教 ， 為 普 及 優 質 教 育 帶 來 新 突 破 。科 大 另 將 於 今 年 夏 季 試 行 把 一 項 MOOC 課 程 設 學 分 ， 科 大 學 生 於 完 成 該 MOOC 課 程 後 ， 再 修 讀 為 期 6 星 期 的 面 授 課 堂 及 並 完 成 習 作 便 可 獲 得 相 關 學 分 。新 增 的 三 個 edX 課 程 將 於 6 月 至 9 月 份 推 出 ， 課 程 簡 介 如 下 ﹕計 算 機 科 學 及 工 程 學 系 龐 鼎 全 教 授 將 於 「 Java 計 算 機 程 式 入 門 」 (Introduction to Computing with Java) 中 講 授 如 何 利 用 Java 作 基 本 程 式 編 碼 及 將 數 據 抽 象 化 。電 子 及 計 算 機 工 程 學 系 施 毅 明 教 授 及 宋 勝 輝 教 授 於 「 通 訊 系 統 的 基 本 概 念 ﹕ 從 訊 號 到 數 據 包 （ 第 一 部 分 ） 」(A System View of Communications: From Signals to Packets (Part 1)) 中 將 探 討 通 訊 系 統 設 計 如 手 提 電 話 等 中 需 要 面 對 的 取 捨 決 擇 以 及 相 關 的 軟 件 工 具 。

Michelle Qin, Business, Year 3 I was honor to be nominated by School of Business and Management (SBM) to represent HKUST (team of 4 students) to join the 2011 Citi International Case Competition (  Our team moved to the university visitor center (i.e. hotel in UST) on Sunday and tried to get ready for the competition. The apartment is really cool and living with others together make this week a totally fun experience! On Monday, we visited the case company - Hong Kong International Terminal (HIT) under Hong Kong Port Holdings (a subsidiary of Cheung Kong Holdings 長江實業 by Mr  After getting the actual case on Tuesday, we started our 26 hours case preparation immediately- We only have 26 hours to prepare for the preliminary presentation on Wednesday, including sleeping time. Well, we slept for 4 hours, much more than some of the other team XD

Chen Qi Feng is a final year undergraduate student studying in computer science and mathematics. His fields of research are computer vision and computer graphics. Four years ago, Chen Qi Feng was admitted by Tsinghua University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He finally decided to pursue his study in HKUST. Before he is graduating from his first degree from the university, he is now awarded scholarships from 9 universities for studying his Ph.D including the Stanford University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, University of California at Berkeley, Columbia University, Cornell University, University of California at Los Angeles and University of Michigan. This is a foreword written for our BSc Global China Studies students for the inauguration of their society on April 10, 2012, and I'm sharing it with you all here, with joy and pride: What is the role of humanities and social science in a university and, furthermore, what is the role of a university in society? I used to think, a university was the beacon of intellectual knowledge and inquiry that inspires us to try to answer the query of human existence from all aspects. I used to believe, and I still believe, we are first and foremost human and social beings, and a university has the primary responsibility to teach students how to relate to themselves and others as human and social beings. It should take on a leadership role in society in “bettering society for a better humanity.”
