Michelle Qin, Business, Year 3 I was honor to be nominated by School of Business and Management (SBM) to represent HKUST (team of 4 students) to join the 2011 Citi International Case Competition (  Our team moved to the university visitor center (i.e. hotel in UST) on Sunday and tried to get ready for the competition. The apartment is really cool and living with others together make this week a totally fun experience! On Monday, we visited the case company - Hong Kong International Terminal (HIT) under Hong Kong Port Holdings (a subsidiary of Cheung Kong Holdings 長江實業 by Mr  After getting the actual case on Tuesday, we started our 26 hours case preparation immediately- We only have 26 hours to prepare for the preliminary presentation on Wednesday, including sleeping time. Well, we slept for 4 hours, much more than some of the other team XD

Chen Qi Feng is a final year undergraduate student studying in computer science and mathematics. His fields of research are computer vision and computer graphics. Four years ago, Chen Qi Feng was admitted by Tsinghua University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He finally decided to pursue his study in HKUST. Before he is graduating from his first degree from the university, he is now awarded scholarships from 9 universities for studying his Ph.D including the Stanford University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, University of California at Berkeley, Columbia University, Cornell University, University of California at Los Angeles and University of Michigan. This is a foreword written for our BSc Global China Studies students for the inauguration of their society on April 10, 2012, and I'm sharing it with you all here, with joy and pride: What is the role of humanities and social science in a university and, furthermore, what is the role of a university in society? I used to think, a university was the beacon of intellectual knowledge and inquiry that inspires us to try to answer the query of human existence from all aspects. I used to believe, and I still believe, we are first and foremost human and social beings, and a university has the primary responsibility to teach students how to relate to themselves and others as human and social beings. It should take on a leadership role in society in “bettering society for a better humanity.”

香 港 科 技 大 學 （ 科 大 ） 獲 郭 少 明 博 士 及 郭 羅 桂 珍 博 士 捐 款 港 幣 500 萬 元 ， 研 發 先 進 的 生 物 醫 療 器 件 ， 協 助 治 療 中 風 病 人 。 是 項 研 究 結 合 神 經 外 科 及 科 大 工 程 學 的 專 業 知 識 和 學 術 專 長 ， 提 升 香 港 醫 療 科 技 發 展 。 作 為 國 際 級 研 究 型 大 學 ， 科 大 與 業 界 緊 密 合 作 ， 致 力 推 動 跨 學 科 研 究 ， 以 解 決 當 前 的 環 球 挑 戰 ， 例 如 能 源 、 環 境 保 護 、 醫 療 等 。 現 時 醫 學 界 普 遍 以 開 顱 手 術 治 療 中 風 ， 微 創 技 術 如 腔 內 引 流 器 及 金 屬 支 架 等 亦 提 升 手 術 成 功 率 及 加 快 病 人 復 原 。 由 科 大 生 物 醫 學 工 程 學 部 郭 正 光 醫 生 、 機 械 工 程 學 系 林 銓 振 教 授 、 袁 銘 輝 教 授 組 成 的 研 究 團 隊 ， 集 生 物 力 學 、 材 料 工 程 、 工 程 設 計 及 醫 學 等 不 同 領 域 的 專 業 知 識 及 思 維 ， 利 用 先 進 的 電 腦 分 析 動 脈 瘤 的 血 管 造 影 數 據 ， 進 行 血 液 動 力 學 模 擬 ， 為 設 計 新 記 憶 金 屬 擾 流 裝 置 ， 提 供 重 要 基 礎 。 研 究 團 隊 已 在 實 驗 室 階 段 取 得 多 項 重 大 突 破 ， 包 括 研 創 先 進 的 血 栓 清 除 裝 置 治 療 缺 血 性 中 風 ； 透 過 嶄 新 的 血 栓 採 集 裝 置 及 溶 血 栓 器 件 ， 減 少 接 觸 中 風 病 人 血 管 壁 ， 並 將 體 內 血 塊 一 次 過 完 整 取 出 ， 較 傳 統 技 術 安 全 ， 以 免 造 成 血 塊 碎 件 ， 引 致 阻 塞 腦 動 脈 的 較 細 血 管 ， 造 成 後 遺 症 。

香 港 科 技 大 學 （ 科 大 ） 今 天 舉 行 大 學 榮 譽 院 士 頒 授 典 禮 ， 以 表 揚 三 位 傑 出 人 士 對 科 大 與 社 會 的 貢 獻 。 頒 授 儀 式 由 大 學 校 董 會 主 席 張 建 東 博 士 及 校 長 陳 繁 昌 教 授 主 持 ， 三 位 獲 頒 授 大 學 榮 譽 院 士 的 傑 出 人 士 分 別 為 奧 雅 納 集 團 副 主 席 陳 嘉 正 博 士 、 捷 和 實 業 行 政 總 裁 鄭 兆 權 先 生 ， 及 科 大 商 學 院 兼 任 教 授 范 凱 霖 教 授 。陳 嘉 正 博 士 為 奧 雅 納 集 團 副 主 席 ， 他 是 香 港 工 程 師 學 會 之 前 會 長 及 該 會 資 深 會 員 ， 以 及 香 港 工 程 科 學 院 院 士 ， 對 工 程 界 貢 獻 良 多 。 他 於 工 程 師 學 會 創 立 師 傳 計 劃 ， 為 優 秀 的 年 青 工 程 師 提 供 培 訓 機 會 。 科 大 籌 建 之 初 ， 陳 博 士 擔 任 總 土 力 工 程 師 ， 策 劃 和 統 籌 科 大 校 舍 的 土 地 平 整 和 結 構 地 基 工 程 。 作 為 科 大 工 學 院 的 兼 任 教 授 ， 他 是 該 學 院 數 個 顧 問 委 員 會 的 委 員 ， 並 為 學 生 提 供 獎 學 金 和 暑 期 實 習 機 會 。 作 為 香 港 綠 色 建 築 議 會 主 席 ， 他 鼓 勵 工 程 師 建 設 綠 色 建 築 ， 為 本 港 建 造 更 佳 的 環 境 。 他 並 參 與 建 造 廣 深 珠 高 速 公 路 跨 境 基 建 、 國 際 金 融 中 心 及 環 球 貿 易 廣 場 等 劃 時 代 建 設 。

由香港科技大學電子及計算機工程學系設立的香港科技大學NIE社群媒體研究中心於今天正式開幕。作為全亞洲第一所專注研究網絡社群媒體文化及技術的研究中心，香港科技大學NIE社群媒體研究中心將對亞洲地區社群媒體的商業應用和未來發展，帶來舉足輕重的影響。開幕典禮於香港科技大學盧家驄大學中心田家炳廳舉行，出席嘉賓包括香港科技大學校長陳繁昌教授、資訊科技界譚偉豪議員JP、香港科技大學工學院院長李德富教授、香港數碼港管理有限公司行政總裁林向陽先生、OpenRice.com《開飯喇！》總經理黃鳳鳴小姐及香港互聯網協會創會主席莫乃光先生。香港科技大學校長陳繁昌教授在典禮上致辭時表示：「科大一直深信創新在全球發展上扮演著舉足輕重的角色；我們很高興成立亞洲首所社群媒體研究中心，讓教研人員積極培育科研及社群媒體專才，為推動香港成為區內創意媒體及資訊科技中心，作出貢獻。」香港科技大學工學院院長李德富教授指出：「香港科技大學NIE社群媒體研究中心的成立，證明了科大在吸引新一代參與社群媒體研究所作出的貢獻。我們期待把研究成果應用在不同的範疇，並把成果帶出大學，回應市場發展的需要。」香港科技大學NIE社群媒體研究中心總監許丕文教授稱：「多謝今天出席開幕典禮的合作伙伴對我們研究中心的支持，我們將會繼續與業界攜手合作，加快市場採納及使用研究成果，並把它推廣到世界。」 與數碼港的合作計劃
