If you’ve ever struggled with trying to pick up tofu with chopsticks, think how difficult it must be for the steely grip of a mechanical robot.  But thanks to some great teamwork and a lot of persistence, that’s exactly the challenge recently solved by five Mechanical Engineering students at HKUST, an achievement that has won them the 2017 President’s Cup for excellence in research and innovation. The team’s ‘Smart Soft-End Effector’ is a flexible robotic gripper that can safely handle the most delicate items, offering strong potential for commercial development.  The idea was initiated in 2015 by Alex Tse Yu, a final year engineering student, who has long been interested in soft robotics and created a prototype.

In celebration of our 25th Anniversary, a growing collection of videos was made to feature the remarkable community at HKUST – past and present. “I have been extremely fortunate to have been able to grow with HKUST. I hope all of you will have the opportunity to also grow with HKUST.” Associate Professor of Division of Social Science, Prof Naubahar Sharif said.

The use of the Scholarly Publications Database (SPD), which showcases the research output of the University, registered a 30% increase with 1.78 million page views recorded in 2016-17.

6 IPO students were selected from 300 applicants for the "Future Leaders in Finance" 2017 Summer Internship Program organized by the Y Society. The Kick-Off Ceremony was held successfully at the China Construction Bank at Central on 5th June 2017.

The second World Elite University Football Tournament was taken place from 23 June to 3 July 2017 at Tsinghua   University, Beijing. Twelve world-class Universities from Germany, Canada, the United States, Netherlands, the United     Kingdom, China, Hong Kong and Australia competed and mingled together during the Tournament.  

香港科技大学(科大)于6月9日向三位杰出人士颁授荣誉大学院士，他们分别为郑绍远教授、冯婉眉女士以及夏理逊先生。荣誉大学院士颁授典礼由大学校董会主席廖长城先生及校长陈繁昌教授主持。 郑绍远教授是科大数学系的荣休教授。郑教授于1996年加入科大出任数学系主任，2004年他成为理学院院长，并于一年后获委任为讲座教授，其后更升任署理副校长（学术）。他亦曾服务科大顾问委员会、校董会及教务委员会。郑教授学术成就斐然，当中黎曼几何和复几何的研究，广获国际认许。郑教授乃美国数学学会会士及世界华人数学家大会「陈省身奖」得主，并曾连续五年获选为科大「十大杰出讲师」之一。 冯婉眉女士是前香港上海汇丰银行有限公司香港区总裁。作为汇丰150年历史上首位出掌该职位的女性，冯女士曾涉猎各个包括资本市场、区域交易等银行业范畴，并于累积经验的过程中扶摇直上。冯女士于30多年的银行家生涯中，致力拓展本港金融业，并协助推展香港成为离岸人民币业务枢纽。她曾服务多个金融和公营机构，当中包括科大校董会财务委员会副主席。冯女士于2013年获颁授铜紫荆星章，以表扬其致力发展香港银行业。 夏理逊先生是专业会计师。他毕业于英国杜伦大学数学系，继而投身会计行业，并加入毕马威会计师事务所。由初期负责核数、审查评鉴、公司上市及其他咨询工作，一步一步攀上事业高峰。夏理逊先生于1987年成为事务所合伙人，其后于2003至2009年间，担任毕马威中国及香港主席和行政总裁，并兼任毕马威亚太区主席。夏理逊先生在退休后仍继续热心服务社会，以独立非执行董事身份，为香港多家顶尖企业服务。夏理逊先生于2008年加入科大校董会担任不同职务。他现为科大顾问委员会荣誉委员。 <赞辞> 有关香港科技大学

The Inter-Varsity Entrepreneurship Challenge 2017, held at Shanghai from 28 May to 4 June 2017, gathered students from Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) and ShanghaiTech University (SHTECH). Students teamed up with peers from different universities were challenged to create a new smart home product/ service to solve a particular social problem in China.

香港科技大学（科大）今日宣布校长陈繁昌教授已向校董会正式请辞。陈校长将于2018年9月1日卸任现时职务。在此期间，他将会协助校董会物色继任人。 陈校长在任九年期间，监督科大的发展，令其成为全球最佳大学之一。在经过周详的考虑后，他认为无论对大学及自己而言，现在乃是适当的时候另觅贤士，带领科大迈向另一阶段。 陈校长在解释其决定时表示：「我为自己对科大所作出的贡献感到十分自豪，去年正好是科大的25周年纪念；现在正是为展开未来新一页的最佳时机。为了支持大学的成长及发展，我相信是时候开始寻找我的继任人选。尽管我宣布离任的决定较预期早了一年，然而我相信科大越早启动招聘的程序，对其往后的发展越有优势。经过我在任丰收的九年，目前是最佳的时候为将来作好安排，以令继任人今后可带来创新的意念及为推进策略性计划作出长远的承诺。这个时间表亦可让我计划自己的人生及事业的另一阶段，并同时在过度时期协助校董会。」 香港科技大学校董会主席廖长城先生表示：「我们对校长的请辞虽然感到可惜但仍尊重他的决定。我谨代表校董会及全体师生，向陈校长多年来的竭诚服务致意。自其于2009年上任后，他的远见、策略、筹募经费的努力，以及对提升学习环境及校园基建的成就启发了很多人。在他的任期内，科大在全球大学排名中跃升，现在已被视为世界上最佳学府之一。」 传媒查询： 林淑媛 电话﹕2358 6313 电邮﹕anitalam@ust.hk   谈家诚 电话﹕2358 8556 / 5190 7882 电邮﹕johnnytam@ust.hk
