馮雁教授在人工智能領域遐邇聞名，其貢獻遠超各項科研突破及其創建的智能系統。在科大春風化雨二十四載，馮教授堪稱現代女性模楷。今次這位人工智能專家與一位工程學女生促膝而談，從成長經歷說起，進而以女性角度探討工程學與人生目標。身為工程學本科生，這是我首次與馮教授面對面傾談，得此良機，雖然自覺幸運，但緊張難免。然而，當馮教授步進房間的一刻，我立時給她所展現的熱誠和自信折服，知道必會從她身上獲益良多。我要證明你是錯的馮教授年輕時興趣廣泛，從藝術、商業到科學，皆有涉獵，機械人和科幻小說尤其叫她著迷。成為工程師的志願，早在中學時代已經萌芽。雙親雖然十分支持女兒勇往直前，追尋夢想，但身邊人卻不看好，甚至大潑冷水。馮教授說：「親友告訴我媽，說我雖然聰穎，在很多事情上獨佔鰲頭，但數學成績難與男孩子匹敵。我當時心裡暗想，一定要證明他是錯的；自此以後，我的數學成績總是名列前茅，從未失手。」不看好其工程路的，還有力勸馮教授轉攻醫科的學校輔導員。那時候，對於喜愛科學的女孩，社會普遍認為當醫生便是她們的最好出路。「我跟他們說，我要當工程師，不是醫生！我對生物學沒有興趣，而且我怕血！」馮教授邊說邊笑。「其他人還告訴我工程師之路崎嶇難行，女孩子要爭一席位，更是事倍功半。但我說，我就是非做不可，結果我說到做到！」即使天賦不凡，也總得遇上伯樂才可發光發熱。在學校裡，馮教授幸運地遇上一位熱心的實驗室技術員，為她打開通往工程學殿堂的大門，就像大熱電視劇集《后翼棄兵》的女主角，受校工啟蒙終成國際象棋巨匠。她回憶說：「我就讀女子中學，在眾多學生興趣小組中，唯獨沒有工程學會！幸好遇上這位實驗室技術員，願意在課餘時間充當我和幾個女孩子的導師，傳授工程學和電腦編程知識。我甚至成立電子學會 — 雖然會員只有自己一人！」
