Prof. Man WONG Awarded 2021 Slottow-Owaki Prize

Prof. Man WONG, Electronic and Computer Engineering, was awarded the 2021 Slottow-Owaki Prize by the Society for Information Display. He was recognized for his continuing dedication to the education of graduate and undergraduate students in display electronics, many of whom went on to successful careers in academia, engineering, and entrepreneurship.

He is the third recipient of this prize at HKUST since departmental fellows Prof. Kwok Hoi-Sing and Prof. Vladimir Chigrinov received their awards in 2013 and 2018 respectively.

Prof. Wong obtained his BS and MS degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and PhD at Stanford University – all in electrical engineering. Prior to joining HKUST in 1992, he was with the Semiconductor Process and Design Center of Texas Instruments, where he worked on the modeling and development of integrated-circuit metallization systems and dry/vapor surface-conditioning processes.

His research interests cover micro-fabrication technology, device structure, and material; physics and technology of thin-film transistors; organic light-emitting diode display technology; modeling and implementation of integrated micro-systems; and thin-film solar cell device and process technology.

He is highly regarded in the display industry for his prolific work in the field of thin-film transistors, with around 350 out of his more than 500 journal and conference publications related to the technology. He holds 67 granted patents, with others pending.

Currently, Prof. Wong serves as the Director of the University’s Center for Display Research and Associate Director of the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Displays and Optoelectronics Technologies. Other than being a member of the Society for Information Display (SID), he is also a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and some honor societies (rank organizations that recognize excellence among peers), including Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, and Sigma Xi.

Established in 1962, the SID is a professional organization focused on the electronic display and visual information technology industries. It provides a unique platform for industry collaboration, communication and training in all related technologies while showcasing the industry’s best new products.
