Case analysis and competitions help students develop business sense and critical thinking skills. Through the process they discover real-world business issues for themselves and gain international exposure. The School of Business and Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) has concluded this season’s case competitions by winning multiple international titles. This best ever performance is the result of the School’s continued effort to promote a case-study learning culture combined with an experience-sharing platform initiated by students.

HKUST Robotics Team beat nine competing teams from six local tertiary institutions in the Robocon 2015 Hong Kong Contest. HKUST has been awarded championship in this competition for five consecutive years since 2011. The contest theme for this year is “ROBOMINTON – BADMINTON ROBO-GAME”, which requires students to design and construct their own robots. The robots were then made to participate in badminton games designed for them. Computer Science student and team leader Au Chun-ming said: “I wish there was an easier way to winning but the truth is there was none. The two HKUST teams with a total of 29 members spent three hours a day to practise and improve the smoothness and accuracy of the robots’ movements.”

Dr Tom Hiu Tung Cheung, Assistant Professor of the Division of Life Science, and Dr Kam Tuen Law, Assistant Professor of the Department of Physics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) were honored the prestigious Croucher Innovation Awards 2015 by the Croucher Foundation for their distinguished scientific research achievements. Each award carries a value of up to HK$5 million over five years. The presentation ceremony held today was officiated by Mr John Tsang Chun-wah, GBM, JP, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government.

Five undergraduate students from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering came second among 153 teams in the first and biggest national aircraft design competition organized by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).

Fencing is a highly competitive and strategic sport which requires high level of agility, endurance and concentration. When ready for combat, the fencer has to get started with a defensive posture, keeping a clear mind on when to hold back and when to wield the foil to score. HKUST’s young fencer Kimberley Vanessa Cheung, a Year 3 student majored in Biomedical Engineering, won bronze for the Women’s Foil Team event in the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, adding a kick to Hong Kong’s impressive medals table. Kimberley’s talent was first spotted in Primary 4; since then, she has reaped numerous awards for Hong Kong, and became a member of the Hong Kong Fencing Association. Currently, she ranks first among the young fencers under 20 in Hong Kong and second overall, marking another momentous milestone in her fencing career.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its annual Long Service Award Presentation Ceremony, honoring faculty and staff members who reached 20 years of service at the University. HKUST established the Long Service Award to express appreciation and recognition to long-serving faculty and staff members whose hard work and dedication have contributed to the University’s rapid rise over the past 24 years. This year, HKUST presented awards to 163 members who joined the University in 1995. HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan, together with the vice-presidents, deans, heads and directors of departments and units attended the presentation ceremony. The awardees’ families and friends were also invited by the University to join the event and shared the joy at the celebration.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received two awards at the Wharton-QS Stars Awards 2014: Reimagine Education, also known as the “Oscars” of innovation in higher education, in recognition of its innovative e-learning programs. The Awards, the first global awards for recognizing innovative higher education pedagogies that enhance learning and employability, were organized by The Wharton SEI Center for Advanced Studies in Management, University of Pennsylvania, and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), publisher of the QS World University Rankings.

The team “EnerBy” from HKUST won the energy management company Schneider Electric’s Global Business Case Challenge “Go Green in the City 2014” that was held in Paris from 17-21 June 2014. The winning team, which comprises of Keith Chan Jin-Deng and Jasmine Lee Man-Ki, students of BSc in Environmental Management and Technology program at HKUST, beat over 10,000 students from all over the world with their business case Energy Forecast Program. The program integrates smart plugs to allow smart metering through a mobile application. The HKUST students’ entry is a mobile application that bills customers before using electricity, allowing people to efficiently monitor and manage their use of energy consumption.
