Two new recycling programs were launched in the fall semester, Styrofoam and electronic and electrical waste recycling on campus.

The Institute for the Environment of HKUST reached a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with institutes of universities in Guangzhou, Macao, and Taiwan on 15 August 2017 to prioritize research cooperation in air quality and climate change.

The Division of Environment & Sustainability and Business Environment Council organized the seminar "Merging Science, Policy, & Business Building a Network of Sustainable Cities" to present and discuss how the urban complexes of Los Angeles, Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta are interconnected through the global trade in goods and resources and the environmental and societal challenges the cities face on 11 September 2017.

A new 3-credit course, ENVR 3010G Sustainability Thinking was offered in last spring semester. This hands-on course was designed for students who would like to learn more about sustainable behaviors and apply sustainable thinking in a real-life project.

A vegetarian or vegan lifestyle is more than protecting the lives of innocent animals, but also to enable a more sustainable way of living. This is why one of the working groups under Green Team held series of events to educate staff and students of HKUST about the benefits of living a plant-based lifestyle.
