The UNESCO-IHE Institute of Water Education (UNESCO-IHE) formed a partnership with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today under an international consortium to undertake a three-year water-saving project, including the adaptation of HKUST's innovative urban water management system for Cuba. Hong Kong's seawater toilet flushing system saves huge amounts of freshwater and energy daily. "Leveraging Hong Kong's unique seawater flushing system, we have developed a novel, energy-efficient and low carbon sewage treatment technology," said Prof Guanghao Chen, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at HKUST. "The ‘Sulphate Reduction, Autotrophic Denitrification and Nitrification Integrated (SANI) Process' can eliminate 90% of sewage sludge production, and reduce sewage treatment costs by 50%, space requirements by over 50%, and cut down greenhouse gas emissions by 35%."

Student halls VIII and IX include green rooftops to reduce heat, solar panels, and eco-friendly furnishings and fittings. Sustainability on campus has received a boost with both of the University’s most recent undergraduate student hostels achieving Building Environmental Assessment Method (BEAM) Eco Building Gold Awards. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) signed an agreement yesterday (28 August) in Xi’an to establish the XJTU-HKUST Joint School of Sustainable Development (JSSD). To tie in with the economic and social development needs of Central and Western regions of Mainland China and beyond, JSSD will focus on promoting sustainability, through nurturing the talents, promoting frontier knowledge and providing advanced technology. It will also create capabilities in the areas of sustainable energy, chemical engineering, materials science, environment, infrastructure, population and socioeconomic development. Both universities are forming a strategic cooperation to foster a new synergetic regional economic development mode.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology opened its multi-purpose Eco-Park, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, today (8 September) to promote teaching and academic research on sustainability from a wider perspective.

Hong Kong's first mobile air pollution monitoring platform was inaugurated today at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The platform will allow researchers to map air pollutant concentrations in real-time, throughout different areas of Hong Kong.The Mobile Real-time Air Monitoring Platform (MAP) was developed by HKUST with a grant of HK$12.3 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Prof. Paul Chu, President of HKUST, and Mr. Paul Cheng, Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, jointly officiated at the Inauguration Ceremony.A powerful research tool to monitor air pollution, MAP is a specially fitted-out van designed for continuous measurements of air pollutants, and is ideal for inaccessible locations such as tunnels and bus depots.
